XIXA – formerly Chicha Dust is the side project of Brian Lopez, Gabriel Sullivan, Winston Watson, Geoff Hidalgo, Jason Urman and Efren Cruz Chavez. They perform their own psychedelic blend of classic Cumbia songs sprinkled with fun, creative originals. Their sets are filled with high energy psychedelic madness; XIXA is sure to have the club shakin’.
ASIAN FRED is the new musical project from former Of the Painted Choir song writer and front man, Frederick Huang. Referencing childhood racial slights and ridicule—playful or otherwise— the name ASIAN FRED stems from his experiences residing in a region with few Asian Americans, exacerbated by his old-fashioned, Western first name. Upon returning to Tucson, Ariz. in August of 2014 with a handful of brand new songs, he recruited a band, consisting of Steven Yanez Romo (Ghostal, Electric Blankets) on drums, Noah Horton (Holy Rolling Empire, Texas Justice) on guitar and vocals and Kyle Gutierrez (The Mean Reds) on bass and vocals. ASIAN FRED continues Huang’s musical evolution where Of the Painted Choir left off. His song writing remains strongly influenced by 60s era pop. However, ASIAN FRED has its own identity, defined by more energy, concise experimentation, and greater emphasis on unusual melodies and song structure. The rhythm section of Romo and Gutierrez provide an R&B framework for Horton and Huang’s Rock & Roll-oriented guitars and unconventional chord progressions. In turn, this framework compliments Huang’s soaring vocal melodies and Horton and Gutierrez’s harmonies.
