Ted Rosenthal Jazz Piano Workshop
($40 / Free for Students 22 & Under | 2:30pm Workshop) The Century Room and the Tucson Jazz Music Foundation present a Jazz Piano Workshop on Saturday, December 14, 2024, 2:30-4:30 pm, led by guest artist Ted Rosenthal, open to all instrumentalists (high school students and up – younger with permission).
Rosenthal will discuss a variety of jazz piano topics including:
Approaches and strategies for ‘comping.
Voicing techniques for solo and group playing.
Creative approaches to arranging standards for trio.
New York pianist Ted Rosenthal actively tours worldwide with his trio, as a soloist, and has performed with many jazz greats, including Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and James Moody. After several performances at The Century Room over the past two years, the Tucson Jazz Music Foundation in partnership with The Century Room is excited to have him conduct a Jazz Piano Workshop at The Century Room for our community of ‘learners’. Rosenthal released 15 CDs as a leader and was artistic director of Jazz at the Riverdale Y and Jazz at Dicapo Theatre — both in NYC. He has also performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and Jon Faddis and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. In addition, Rosenthal has been the pianist of choice for many top jazz vocalists including Helen Merrill, Ann Hampton Callaway, Kurt Elling and Barbara Cook. He appeared on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz on National Public Radio and performed with David Sanborn on NBC’s Night Music.

The workshop is FREE to students ages 22 and under (bring your current valid student ID to the workshop / required for free participation).

Participants are invited to attend the closed rehearsal following the workshop (4:30-5:30 pm). The performances will be at 6:30 & 8:30 pm. Tickets to the concert must be purchased through The Century Room. A limited amount of discounted tickets will be available for students and workshop participants.
