History of Hotel Congress

Larry Boyce

The Hotel Congress lobby was painted in “Southwest Deco” style by the famous muralist Larry Boyce. Boyce arrived on bicycle in the spring of 1989 and offered to decorate the lobby in exchange for a place to park his bike. He traveled by bicycle over 250,000 miles in his lifetime, leaving beautiful murals along the way in churches, hotels, movie stars’ homes, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and even the office of then Vice President George Bush Sr. It is only fitting that we also use the large wall space in the Lobby to house a rotating gallery featuring some of the best local and national artists. You can’t predict what you’ll see here, but it will always be interesting.
