In a career on the road less traveled that has found him sharing stages with a staggering diversity of artists: from Mavis Staples, Emmylou Harris & Greg Brown, to Bon Iver, Arcade Fire & Gregory Alan Isakov, and more recently an impressive array of Native American musicians including John Trudell, Quiltman, Keith Secola, and Annie Humphrey, Huckfelt wanted to build a new musical community for this collection of songs. While his 2018 solo debut record “Stranger Angels” was written in complete isolation at Isle Royale National Park on Lake Superior just a few miles from the Canadian border, “Room Enough, Time Enough” was created in the borderlands of southern Arizona, in the musical mecca of Tucson, the high Sonoran Desert and one of the richest, most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. He asked Tucson producer and multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Sullivan (XIXA) to open up Dust + Stone Studios to a host of friends, contemporaries, strangers, artists, outlaws, cowboys, and Native musicians: Ojibwe ambassador of Native Americana music Keith Secola, Tucson’s own living songwriting legend Billy Sedlmayr, Giant Sand founder and head purveyor of the southwestern electric-fuzz border sound Howe Gelb; former Bob Dylan drummer Winston Watson, and Calexico hired guns Connor Gallaher on pedal steel and Jon Villa on trumpet. Together with the unmatched vocal chants of John Trudell’s constant collaborator & Warm Springs Nation Native singer Quiltman, these songs found their people and vice versa in a perfect storm of generosity, fierceness and compassion. In thousands of shows across the United States, Canada & overseas, Huckfelt’s grassroots following has grown from small-town opera houses, Midwestern barn concerts, and progressive benefit events to national tours and festival stages like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Edmonton and Calgary Folk Fests, and the legendary First Avenue club in his beloved Minneapolis home.

—9MILLION—9Million is a Toronto alt rock/shoegaze band helmed by multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Matthew Tomasi. Best known for his work with alt-pop artists like Ethel Cain and Nicole Dollanganger, Tomasi has also gained steady notoriety in his local music community for his work as a producer and mix engineer. A tireless creator and songwriter himself, Tomasi also plays and contributes creatively to the music of countless other bands and independent artists. Tomasi along with 6 other members complete the 9Million project which includes Ace Mendoza (Lead Guitar, Vocals), Danielle Clark (Vocals, Acoustic), Lia Lepre (Keys, Percussion), Jamie Fastlane (Bass), Noah Aviles-Betel (Drums), and Looch Man (Guitar, Vocals). Tomasi says 9Million started out “as a creative outlet for myself to explore new sounds and ideas that I wasn’t touching on with any of my other projects or clients”, but quickly the project took on a collaborative spirit. Since their release of “Gush” 9Million have been touring all over North America supporting bands such as Glitterer, Cold Mega, Ethel Cain, Angel Du$t, Candy, & Fleshwater.

—BATHS—Will Wiesenfeld has been recording original music for more than 15 years, most notably under the moniker Baths. Will has had albums, collaborations and remix work released on dozens of independent labels, and toured around the world. He maintains a philosophy of keeping his work as personal as possible, with the majority of his music created in his home studio. For his fourth full-length album Gut, Will embraces a new personal ethos of writing “from the stomach” versus writing from the heart. “I’m sketching my strongest and most pervasive feelings out quickly and treating their roughness as gospel, then exploring them in greater detail with the added sheen of time and perspective.” The most impressive Baths album of Wiesenfeld’s career, Gut spans a breathtaking spectrum of lacerating hopelessness to lustful joy, inspired by the more unforgiving oeuvre of post-punk and noise music, and any music that works its magic through blunt force rather than careful introspection.

—FASHION CLUB (LA)— Fashion Club is the recording alias of Los Angeles artist Pascal Stevenson, who originally conceived of the project while on tour with her band Moaning. Listening to Fashion Club’s self-produced second album A Love You Cannot Shake feels like being caught in the crossfire of a profound beam of light. You can’t help but feel both enlivened and exposed as its aberrant synth lines, artful strings and disfigured guitars swell into larger-than-life crescendos, which evoke a divine yet probing spotlight. You can bask in the glow of a towering light with self-assured poise, but there’s also something inherently uncomfortable about an imposing light source—revealing yourself to onlookers (and oneself) comes with varying levels of anxiety and self-doubt. This is the tension at the heart of A Love You Cannot Shake, a record of lush radiance and otherworldly scope, with each track functioning as its own twinkling, transportive realm.

—MIND”S EYE— Mind’s Eye are in the midst of a career-making year, including their first US headline tour (sold out shows in Orange County, San Diego, Phoenix, and LA @ El Rey), support tours with late night drive home and Hockey Dad, and nearing 70 million global streams. Over the course of the past two years, the high-energy quintet have developed a rampantly loyal and perpetually growing fanbase, depicted beautifully in the band’s recent TikTok. —THE HANDSOME FAMILY—The Handsome Family (songwriting and marriage partners Brett and Rennie Sparks) have been defining the dark end of Americana for over 30 years. Brett writes the music and Rennie writes the words. Their work has been covered by many artists including Jeff Tweedy, Andrew Bird and Phoebe Bridgers. Their song “Far From Any Road” was the opening theme for HBO’s True Detective (season one) and still receives thousands of Shazams every week from all over the world.

—FAETOOTH—Faetooth is a three-piece “fairy doom” band originating from Los Angeles. The group is composed of Ari May as guitarist and vocalist, Jenna Garcia as bassist and vocalist, and Rah Kanan on drums. Formed in 2019, the group sought to navigate personal vulnerability and musical experimentation by delving deep into the nature of self, the beauty inherent in the natural world, and the captivating mysteries that surround us.

Drawing inspiration from doom metal, black metal, shoegaze, and sludge, the term “fairy-doom” aptly characterizes their distinctive fusion of sounds.

—GLIXEN—Eluding all expectations of the current alternative rock space, Glixen come from Phoenix, Arizona and have taken their sound coast to coast on tour in North America. As influences, lead vocalist/guitarist Aislinn Ritchie cites My Bloody Valentine, No Doubt, and T.A.T.U. In the same breath, also citing heavier acts such as HUM and My Vitriol. Ritchie founded Glixen in 2020 and later added the talents of lead guitarist Esteban Santana, drummer Keire Johnson, and bassist Sonia Garcia.

Glixen released their debut EP She Only Said via Julias War Records on August 11th, 2023. The lead single Splendor sets the tone of the EP by masterfully capturing the swirling ambiance of 90s rock, ethereal pop vocals, and fuzzed out walls of guitar all wrapped up in a lacey white ribbon. She Only Said is a cathartic anthem that feels like glitter and thorns down the listeners spine.

Montana-based Izaak Opatz brings his confessional prog-country to Club Congress on Sunday, March 30th, joined by Tucson legends and alt-country brethren Golden Boots. Like many of his favorite songwriters (John Hartford, Lucinda Williams, Jeff Tweedy), Izaak Opatz is an ungulate in life’s winter pasture, chewing on and metabolizing disappointment, heartbreak, and the other tough stuff into enjoyable musical carbohydrates. A compulsive metaphorager (and inveterate wordplayboy), Opatz breaks it all down with enzymes of wry humor, thoughtful simile and close observation – a therapeutic process of narrativizing his own life that, almost as a byproduct, turns out savory nuggets of literate, confessional pop.

—WEATHERDAY—Weatherday is the noise-pop project of the mononymous Swedish artist Sputnik. While they have also found success with their side project, Lola’s Pocket PC, it is their cult-acclaimed album Come in that has garnered them a large and dedicated following through its raucous musical universe and serpentine sparklepunk stylings. Often heralded as an achievement of lo-fi bedroom pop tangled with threads of emo and DIY, Come in is better described, in its author’s own words, as a “life goal.”

The initial spark that ignited the fiery, heated debut from Weatherday originated from Sputnik’s desire to write, perform, and produce a record all on their own, from the ground up. Starting in 2014-2015, their preliminary attempts at what would eventually become Come in first materialized as a shoegaze EP, and then a dream-pop meets chamber-pop LP. Ever the perfectionist though, Sputnik wasn’t satisfied with the results and deleted the releases without a trace, finally deciding to set out in the direction of something more akin to their longtime influences of emo and its various subgenres.

After two years of tinkering in this stylistic sweetspot, Sputnik settled on the eleven knotted, maximal tracks that comprise Come in. From the caustic, harsh peaks of “Sleep in while you’re doing your best” to the soothing piano-laden passages of “Embarrassing paintings” and experimental, granular coda of “Water dreamer the same,” the range of Weatherday’s debut is doubtlessly a product of an artist who refuses to compromise a single shred of their vision.

—YOUTH LAGOON—Youth Lagoon, the alias of Idaho-based producer and composer Trevor Powers, returns with a new single/video, “My Beautiful Girl.” Much like entering a dream, Powers’ worlds often feel like oddly familiar fragments of a childhood memory. “Songwriting just feels like receiving messages from a portal and transcribing them,” says Powers. “Some nights I’ll wake up at 3 am and words feel like they’re bludgeoning my skull with a baseball bat. —DUMMY—Dummy — the Los Angeles band comprised of Alex Ewell, Emma Maatman, Nathan O’Dell, and Joe Trainor — announces its new album, Free Energy, out September 6th on Trouble In Mind Records, and shares the lead single/video, “Nullspace.” Pop has always been a big part of Dummy’s sound, but it manifests differently on Free Energy. Sometimes it’s quite literal (and funny), such as the bubbly synth sequence made with a Korg EM1 popping all over lead single “Nullspace,” which features a melody written by O’Dell and is the song the band calls the record’s “sonic mission statement and really influenced by Mark Van Hoen, especially the cut-up dreamy dance-pop he was making on the Locust record Morning Light.”
