—COCO MONTOYA—“’Just play what you feel, be real about it, and enjoy yourself.’ That’s what Albert Collins taught me,” says the award-winning guitar virtuoso and soul-deep singer Coco Montoya. The self-taught, left-handed Montoya mastered his craft under Collins’ tutelage. Incorporating lessons learned from his mentors, the iconic Collins (for whom he originally drummed), and UK legend John Mayall, Montoya puts his own stamp onto every song he performs. Since his first solo album in 1995 (which won him the Blues Music Award for Best New Artist), Montoya’s endlessly inventive guitar work and passionate, hard-hitting vocals have kept him at the top of the blues world. With his new Alligator Records album, Writing On The Wall (his sixth for the label), Montoya delivers what he is already calling one of the best records he’s ever made. For the very first time on Alligator, he decided to bring his road-tested band—noted keyboardist and songwriter Jeff Paris (Keb’ Mo’, Bill Withers), bassist Nathan Brown, and drummer Rena Beavers—into the studio with him. Between the camaraderie of the long-time bandmates and the sheer talent of all involved, the results have left Coco, in his words, “over the moon.”

Produced by Grammy Award-winner Tony Braunagel (Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal) and co-produced by Jeff Paris, Writing On The Wall is a tour-de-force of memorable, hook-filled songs, sung with passion and fueled by equally memorable, top shelf musicianship. The 13 tracks include five written or co-written by Montoya. The set opens with a signature, career-defining performance of the soul-baring I Was Wrong, written for Coco by songwriter Dave Steen. From the blistering Save It For The Next Fool to the enjoy now/pay later philosophy of Jeff Paris’ (I’d Rather Feel) Bad About Doin’ It to the riveting reinvention of Lonnie Mack’s Stop, Montoya delivers each song with heart-pounding emotion. Special guest Lee Roy Parnell adds his well-seasoned slide guitar to the smoldering A Chip And A Chair. And Coco’s friend, guitarist Ronnie Baker Brooks (son of late Alligator star Lonnie Brooks), joins in for some good-natured fun on the droll Baby, You’re A Drag and adds his blistering playing to the searing cover of Bobby Bland’s You Got Me.

“I am so proud of this one,” Montoya says of Writing On The Wall. “We recorded in Jeff Paris’ studio and everything just gelled together. And the band inspired me; they all gave extra effort at every turn. Jeff, Nathan and Rena played so great, they ended up making me play even harder. They made me sound better than I am!”

Henry “Coco” Montoya was born in Santa Monica, California, on October 2, 1951, and raised in a working-class family. Growing up, Coco immersed himself in his parents’ record collection. He listened to big band jazz, salsa, doo-wop and rock ‘n’ roll. His first love was drums; he acquired a kit at age 11. He got a guitar two years later. “I’m sure the Beatles had something to do with this,” Montoya recalls. “I wanted to make notes as well as beats.” But guitar was his secondary instrument. Montoya turned his love of drumming into his profession, playing in a number of area rock bands while still in his teens and becoming an in-demand drummer.

In 1969, Montoya saw Albert King opening a Creedence Clearwater Revival/Iron Butterfly concert at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. He was transformed. “After King got done playing,” says Montoya, “my life was changed. When he played, the music went right into my soul. It grabbed me so emotionally that I had tears welling up in my eyes. Nothing had ever affected me to this level. He showed me what music and playing the blues were all about.

I knew that was what I wanted to do.”

The next chapter of Montoya’s story was kick-started by a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins. Montoya says, “Albert was coming through Los Angeles and needed to borrow my drum set, which I left at the club where he was going to be playing. I went down to see his show that night and it just tore my head off. The thing that I had seen and felt with Albert King came pouring back on me when I saw Albert Collins.”

A short time later, Collins hired Montoya as his band’s drummer. With Albert mentoring Coco on the guitar during the band’s downtime, Coco soon became Collins’ second guitarist. “We’d sit in hotel rooms for hours and play guitar,” remembers Montoya. “He’d play that beautiful rhythm of his and just have me play along. He was always saying, ‘Don’t think about it, just feel it.’ He was like a father to me,” says Coco, who often slept at Collins’ home. When Collins declared Montoya his “son,” it was the highest praise and affection he could offer. In return, Montoya learned everything he could from the legendary Master of the Telecaster.

Needing a more regular paycheck, Montoya left Collins’ band after two years and took a job tending bar, jamming on weekends at Los Angeles clubs. One day, legendary British musician John Mayall heard Coco playing Otis Rush’s All Your Love (I Miss Loving) onstage. Soon after, Mayall called on Montoya to join his famous Bluesbreakers. Filling the shoes of previous Bluesbreaker guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor would not be easy, but Montoya knew he could not pass up the opportunity to play with another legend. For the next ten years he toured the world and recorded with Mayall on seven albums, soaking up the experience of life on the road and in the recording studio.

Montoya’s recorded debut as a bandleader came with 1995’s Gotta Mind To Travel (originally on Silvertone Records in England and later issued in the USA on Blind Pig Records). The album became an instant fan favorite. Blues enthusiasts, radio programmers and critics sent praise from all corners. The album immediately made it clear that Montoya ranked among the best players on the contemporary scene. Two more Blind Pig albums followed, and Coco was well on his way.

In 2000, Montoya’s Alligator debut, Suspicion, quickly became the best-selling album of his career, earning regular radio airplay on over 120 stations nationwide. Montoya’s fan base exploded. After two more highly successful and massively popular Alligator releases—2002’s Can’t Look Back and 2007’s Dirty Deal—Montoya signed with Ruf Records, cutting both a live and a studio album. Returning to Alligator with 2017’s Hard Truth and 2019’s Coming In Hot, the guitar master continued to blaze his trail. “Montoya unleashes one career-topping performance after another,” declared the UK’s Blues Matters.

Still an indefatigable road warrior, Montoya continues to tour virtually nonstop, bringing audiences to their feet from New York to New Orleans to Chicago to San Francisco. Across the globe, he’s performed in countries including Australia, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, England, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, Italy, Poland, Russia, the Czech Republic and Canada.

Now, with the dynamic Writing On The Wall and a tour calendar busting at the seams, Coco Montoya is as excited as he’s ever been to perform the new songs live with his burning-hot band. Montoya’s well-earned reputation as an eye-popping live performer precedes him. Vintage Guitar states, “Coco keeps getting better and better. —THE NUDE PARTY—For The Nude Party, nearly a decade has flown by in the blink of an eye. In that time, the New York-based band has released a pair of well-received albums, an EP, and played countless shows. Prior to the pandemic, the band was really starting to hit its stride. They had a system in place and were spreading their brand of melodic rock to the masses. In fact, they could count Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, and Orville Peck as vocal supporters, which led to support slots for each. Soon, incredible live appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and Shaky Knees became the norm.

In late 2020, The Nude Party released its sophomore album, Midnight Manor, which debuted at #1 on the Alternative New Artists Album Chart. The sextet was unable to tour behind it and compared its release to skipping a stone over a raging river. A byproduct was that it showed the band that on their third album, they couldn’t lean on their tried-and-true method of testing out new material live and then hunker down to record.

Instead of sitting around, the band got busy. Setting up shop in their Upstate New York headquarters, the group used the funds they’d saved and spent a year building a studio space out of a barn. Tired of paying for studio time and being rushed, The Nude Party methodically worked at their own pace. Out were the sessions lasting a strict handful of days. In were impromptu writing moments and picking every sound as they went along.

When the band met the Tampa based engineer Matthew Horner, they discovered that they had the opposite problems: Matthew had a collection of incredible gear with no studio and The Nude Party had a great new studio with no gear. So they invited him to move his equipment up to the Catskills to record an album together. Such was the origin of the band’s third album, Rides On.

Unlike their first two albums, The Nude Party decided to produce Rides On themselves. With their new space and the help of Horner, The Nude Party had as much fun creating as they ever had at any other point in their career. The lack of pressure allowed them to record over 20 songs, including some that dabbled in electro-pop and stripped-down country before settling on the final 14 songs. Rides On, the band confidently says, is their best record. It’s also the most homegrown and the most organic record The Nude Party has created to date. Working on the album themselves allowed for a democratic process where each band member could take a fuller role in producing the songs they wrote. There was some initial trepidation about there being too many cooks in the kitchen. But as is the benefit of owning your own studio space, time was not a factor. In turn, it allowed for the band’s ideas to blossom, everyone’s voice be taken into account and create an exciting, collaborative vibe.

The relaxed atmosphere of the sessions, and arriving with only loosely structured material, allowed the band to thrive in the studio. It also unleashed a diverse sonic texture compared to their previous releases, as best demonstrated by the title track, “Ride On.” Sonically, the song is reminiscent of Sticky Fingers-era Stones, but its lyrics are mini-vignettes where Magee sings about persevering through adversity. The twangy, blues-drenched licks of the title track, the breezy desert dust encapsulated by the ‘70s infused “Hard Times,” the Shaun Couture-led “Sold Out of Love,” the swinging ‘60s garage vibes of “Cherry Red Boots,” which captures the spirit of what The Nude Party are going for — and showcases their growth as a band. As does expanding the band’s sonic palate with a cover of Dr. John’s “Somebody Tryin’ To Hoodoo Me.” It would have been easy to stick to the New Orleans musician’s format, but the band showed off their prowess with their own darker, electric version of the deep cut.

The Nude Party coalesced and embraced the spirit of collaboration. They’re excited to begin the next chapter of their career.

At a time when it would have been easy to pack it in, the band continues to persevere

New beginnings, rear-view reflections, and ruminations on the fluidity of time: Uncertain Country captures these feelings and so much more. This celebration, 11-songs long, follows a prolonged period of collective anxiety. Though recorded in different locales – and with a variety of musicians – a theme of questioning runs throughout.

Even before the world turned upside down, singer-songwriter Tony Dekker felt mired in uncertainty: from the climate crisis and the ever-changing political landscape to deep shifts within the music industry. The “uncertain country” Dekker chose as the album’s theme is not a specific place. Rather, it’s a territory we, as humans, inhabit in the 21st century – a world that, more often than not, is confusing, unfamiliar, and unsettling.

The long journey from there to here started more than three years ago when Dekker took a 10-day trip to one of his favorite places: the north shore of Lake Superior. A pair of friends and collaborators – Adam CK Vollick (who filmed the experience) and Joe Lapinski (who co-produced Uncertain Country) – joined him. On this immersive trip, the songwriter soaked in the beauty of the landscapes and learned the stories of the people who have inhabited them since time immemorial.

The two songs that open Uncertain Country, the title track and “When The Storm Has Passed,” were recorded at the Oddfellows Temple Hall in St. Catharines, Ontario, in September 2020. These jubilant sessions, following five months of unease, were a much-needed release for Dekker and his band. Both songs capture the album’s themes of the elasticity of time and processing change.

Making this joyful noise together again set a tone – and direction – for the record. The music morphed from hushed and folky to a more comforting, curated listening experience, acting as a kind of salve. One hears echoes of some of Dekker’s early 1990s influences: propeller-pop and indie lo-fi bands like Teenage Fanclub, Galaxie 500, and Buffalo Tom.

The rest of the songs on Uncertain Country were recorded in other acoustically distinctive locations close to Dekker’s home in the Niagara Region. Locales included the Silver Spire United Church in downtown St. Catharines, Ontario, and a pair of buildings in Ball’s Falls Conservation Area in the village of Jordan Station: an old chapel that featured a pump organ and a historic barn on the same property.

Long-time Great Lake Swimmers member, multi-instrumentalist Bret Higgins, is featured on many of the songs, as is keyboardist Kelsey McNulty. Guests include newcomers and old friends: the group Minuscule, an all-woman identifying choir based in the Niagara Region, led by choral arranger Laurel Minnes, and JUNO Award-winner Serena Ryder, who sings on a pair of songs: “I Tried to Reach You” and “Swimming Like Flying.” “Moonlight, Stay Above” epitomizes what Great Lake Swimmers represents. The 10-voice strong choir lifts the lonely-sounding and wistful song up. As with that addition, the band on each album is fluid and always evolving. It always starts and ends with Dekker, but the songs themselves suggest what players and instrumentation might fit best with each new recording and live touring band.

Twenty years since the first self-titled release, Uncertain Country shows a songwriter at the top of his craft with so much more to say. In a time of uncertainty, one thing is certain: the Great Lake Swimmers’ first collection of new songs in five years is worth the wait.

–The Surfrajettes– The Surfrajettes are a four-piece instrumental combo from Toronto, ON, Canada. Since forming in late 2015, the band has charmed audiences with their clever mix of psychedelic rock and reverb-drenched surf music, sky-high beehives, go-go boots, and eyeliner as thick as their guitar strings.

The band achieved viral online notoriety from their home-made performance videos and their feature by Norman’s Rare Guitars in LA. The debut 45 single “Party Line / Toxic” released late 2018 on Hi-Tide Recordings to immediate success. The band has toured extensively in its support, including performances on The Beach Boys Cruise, The Melissa Etheridge Cruise, at Nashville Boogie, Wild O Fest in Mexico City, The New England Shake-Up!, Surf Guitar 101 Convention, Tiki Oasis & Hi-Tide Summer Holiday: Asbury Park.

The band released the follow up single “Hale’iwa Hustle / Banzai Pipeline” in 2020, supported by a festival appearance at Hi-Tide Winter Holiday: Pittsburgh. The group spent the rest of 2020 and most of 2021 writing and recording their debut LP “Roller Fink” – in stores NOW from Hi-Tide Recordings.

The Surfrajettes are guitarists Shermy Freeman and Nicole Damoff, bassist Sarah Butler, and drummer Annie Lillis. When not on tour, the group is busy woodshedding in their secret beach hut, sewing new miniskirts, debating vintage gear, and daydreaming about performing in a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Aparna presently hosts “The Introvert’s Survival Guide,” a new eight-part self-help interview podcast that premiered on Audible via Fresh Produce Media, which features a plethora of notable guests such as Seth Meyers, Elyse Myers, and Eric Smith.

On TV, Aparna has starred in many memorable roles on such series as Peacock’s LOPEZ VS LOPEZ, Max’s SEARCH PARTY, Netflix’s SPACE FORCE and BOJACK HORSEMAN, and Comedy Central’s CORPORATE. Her TV stand up appearances include Netflix’s THE STANDUPS, HBO’s TWO DOPE QUEENS, and Comedy Central’s THE HALF HOUR. Aparna’s late-night standup debut was on TBS’s CONAN in 2013 and she was one of the breakout “New Faces” at the prestigious JUST FOR LAUGHS FESTIVAL in Montreal. She’s since made appearances on THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT, LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS, and THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN. –MICHAEL PALASCAK– is a comedian who grew up in Wabash, Indiana, began his career in Chicago and now resides in LA. He performed on both The Late Late Show with James Corden and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the same year. In addition, his resume includes A Little Late with Lilly Singh, Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Conan, has a Comedy Central Half Hour special, and was a Top 5 Finalist on Last Comic Standing where one judge claimed, “My first impression of Michael was a great likability. This is a guy that could star in a sitcom.”

Michael’s likability allows him to relate to his audiences in a real way which sets up the huge laughs he gets from his sharp, personal material. Consistently writing and performing, Michael recently released both a new album— The Internet Live through 800 Pound Gorilla and a new stand-up special on the Dry Bar app— 1984. —MARGARITAS PODRIDAS—The Hermosillo, Mexico – based quartet Margaritas Podridas was born out of admiration for the underground rock landscape of the ‘90s, culling from the distortion – laden songwriting of the grunge scene, the scuzz – coated pop of shoegaze, and the noisy sojourns of that decade’s college rock’s guitar icons. Devendra Banhart’s Flying Wig, is a landscape of recurrent dualities; a can of paradoxes, a box of worms. What goes up, must come down, eventually. Battle-scarred by life and loss, Banhart found himself despondent, folded inwards; finding it difficult to speak, let alone sing.

“It’s about transmuting despair into gratitude, wounds into forgiveness, grief into praise” ruminates Banhart on his eleventh studio album. Gliding through the air, the whisper of two buoyant words symbolically and at times, literally appear — “and yet…” (inspired by ‘A World of Dew’ by 19th century Japanese poet Kobayashi Issa) — coloring in the melancholic outlines and replacing them with a bonded optimism. “The ‘and yet, and yet,’” Banhart explains, “is our ability to face despair with hope, to keep on failing and loving. My whole life has been filled with sadness. Everything I do in life is to help cope with that sadness.”

Turning his back on Los Angeles’ wailing sirens, he packed the bones that would become Flying Wig’s songs into a bag and took to the secluded woodland of a Topanga canyon. The album is the actualisation of a precious friendship with the acclaimed solo artist, multi-instrumentalist,

Mexican Summer stablemate and producer of Flying Wig, Cate Le Bon. The pair’s coming together is one prophesied by the mirror-image titles of their early solo albums (Banhart’s 2002

Oh Me Oh My to Le Bon’s 2009 Me Oh My) and a tenderness built on crude haircuts (“we finally met, soon after she was cutting my hair with a fork and that was that”) and home-made tattoos —but never previously translated into the recording studio. “She’s the only person I wanted to make this record with,” Banhart admits. “We set out to make a record sonically unlike anything I have made before – with a new creative partner at the helm. We definitely wanted a new sound, electronic yet organic and warm…we wanted to draw out and emphasize the emotional aspect of a synthesizer.”

The redwood and pine-surrounded cabin studio (once owned by Neil Young) where Banhart was “constantly listening to the Grateful Dead” somehow birthed something slick, city pop-adjacent and Eno-esque. The product of a ritualistic creative practice that melts down and re-casts as it mulls, the stuff of sadness beautified as it changes shape — culminating in a record that “sounds like getting a very melancholic massage, or weeping, but in a really nice outfit…if I’m going to cry”, Banhart mentions, “I want to do it in my best dress.”

Wearing, for much of the writing and recording, an Issey Miyake dress the color of the spring sky — a gift from Le Bon’s own wardrobe — and his grandmother’s pearls, Banhart found himself emboldened, protected; an experience “like returning to from where I started to sing when I was a kid” (as recently emulated onstage at an emotional homecoming gig in Caracas — Banhart’s first ever Venezuelan show). He elaborates: “I first started singing in my mother’s dresses when I was nine years old. It wasn’t about sexuality, just connecting with my feminine side and feeling that I had permission… It felt like a power. And that’s a very safe and comfortable place for me. I think a lot of the record is that – searching for hope, searching for a safe feeling.”

Nowhere more than in the album’s title is this sense of joyful abandon most strongly distilled. The real wig that inspired it was, explains Banhart, a birthday present from the artist Isabelle

Albuquerque. “I placed it on a mic stand and it just hovered there for months in the middle of my living room. Over time, it began to take on a playfully eerie presence and I started to imagine that while I was asleep the Wig would fly off into the night and hang out with all the other wigs and toupees that were flying around… It seemed like a lovely and haunting image, a symbol for freedom.” Combined with Banhart’s wry and jubilant list of other inspirations for the record — “the ballroom scene of the mid 80s, glamor, whales, the lonely employee at a dead-end corporate gig, the bloodshot eyes of the divorcee, the night nurse, the rebellious nun” — there is, after all, much up to be found with the down.

“I’m looking for a feeling / Hard to explain,” he echoes on Flying Wig’s opening track ‘Feeling,’ sibilant waves on sand, reverb pedals, elemental drones and mantric tones carrying a confessional intimacy to the fore as dusk falls. The album’s ten songs unfurl languorously into the embrace of the night: becoming trails of light on the mournful ‘Fireflies’, bathing in the glow of the new-risen moon on ‘Sight Seer’, and bearing witness to the strangeness of metropolitan solitude on ‘Sirens’ — the sound of panic the only company in a place filled with people.

Ever an intuitive producer, Le Bon reflects Banhart’s craft back on itself; arrangements of off-beat percussion, cascading piano and subtly wonky sax the looking-glass double of the softly-spoken dismemberment that suspends “blood outside the vein” on ‘Sight Seer’; conjures “an eye without a head” on the title track, and on ‘Nun’, finds Banhart “running / running / running / running / running out of legs.” The album’s contributing circle was kept small and familiar; its personnel drawn from both artists’ tried, tested and trusted list of collaborators (Nicole Lawrence on pedal steel and guitar, Todd Dahlhoff on bass, Greg Rogove on drums, Euan Hinshelwood on saxophone), with Le Bon playing a panoply of additional parts (synths, guitar, percussion, bass, piano) herself. The record’s finishing touches also came courtesy of Le Bon stalwarts, with mixing and engineering by Samur Khouja — “He and Cate have such a dynamic at this point,” notes Banhart, “that non-verbal communication, that psychic exchange that comes from proximity and time and trust” — and mastering by Heba Kadry.

Through it all, Issa’s spirit of the upside — that glimmering “and yet…” in an otherwise dark and fleeting world — pervades. The tough riff of ‘Twin’ serves as the iron bars that entrap its writer in the “Same desolate space / Same no way out / Same infinite doubt”, and yet…at its core, there is something cherished: “this precious thing / At the heart of everything you’ve wanted.

Stepping outside of himself to examine the unspeakable, Devendra Banhart is suddenly freer than a bird. He is as free as a wig that transcends the body, transcends the head, and makes for the clouds.

**The Old 97’s** is an American alternative country-rock band that formed in Dallas, Texas, in 1993. Led by Rhett Miller (vocals, guitar), the band also includes Murry Hammond (bass), Ken Bethea (guitar), and Philip Peeples (drums). Known for their energetic live performances and clever songwriting, the Old 97’s have become a staple in the Americana music scene.

Their debut album, “Hitchhike to Rhome,” was released in 1994 and gained a devoted following with its catchy hooks and relatable storytelling. The band achieved widespread acclaim with their second album, “Wreck Your Life” (1996), featuring anthems like “Victoria,” “Barrier Reef,” and “Timebomb,” which solidified their position as leaders of the alt-country movement.

Throughout their career, the Old 97’s have continued to evolve their sound, combining elements of country, rock, and pop. Notable albums include “Too Far to Care” (1997), “Fight Songs” (1999), and “Most Messed Up” (2014), showcasing their ability to capture the essence of love, longing, and life’s ups and downs.

**HOLLER CHOIR**

Led by the lyrical craftsmanship of singer, guitarist, and songwriter Clint Roberts, the distinctly Appalachian, old-time sound of Asheville’s Holler Choir combines haunting harmonies, stirring string compositions, and heart-wrenching ballads, yet hardly conforms to a stereotypical genre. Call it a confluence of old-time, Americana, and bluegrass, but, by its own exceptional design, the sound and atmosphere of Holler Choir are singular. –SHEER MAG–Coming on like a soulful yet unholy amalgam of The Mekons, Thin Lizzy, The Jackosn 5, and MC5, Pennsylvania’s Sheer Mag distill big ’70s riffs and garage punk attitude into a hook-filled, lo-fi dance party.

The band formed in Philadelphia in 2014 around the talents of Kyle and Hart Seely, Matt Palmer, Ian Dykstra, and powerhouse vocalist Tina Halladay, and within a year started issuing a flurry of 7″ releases that caught the attention of everyone from Stereogum and Pitchfork to Rolling Stone and NPR. In early 2016, Sheer Mag issued their Static Shock Records label debut LP, I/II, which collected all the tracks from their first two EPs. A year later, another edition of their singles compilation was issued, this time adding the four tracks featured on their aptly named third EP, III. The band had already begun work on their debut full-length, with Hart Seely at the controls. Featuring a more nuanced approach to their tinny AOR sound, and with Halladay’s vocals even more front and center, Need to Feel Your Love was released in July 2017. —LATE NIGHT DRIVE HOME—Acclaimed by Alternative Press as “reinventing indie rock”, late night drive home are bringing their roots of growing up in a small town outside of El Paso around the world.

Starting in 2019, singer Andre Portillo and guitarist Juan “Ockz” Vargas learned how to play their instruments while simultaneously learning how to produce music. When 2020 hit, the two best friends spent their time together uploading their work on SoundCloud. As they started to gain momentum online, Ockz recruited his cousin Freddy Baca on the bass (who learned how to play the bass in order to join the band) and their long time friend, Brian Dolan on drums. On one fateful day in 2021, they released their hit song “Stress Relief” on all streaming platforms, their lives were forever changed.

“Stress Relief” accumulated over 100M streams across all platforms, which resulted in late night drive home signing a record deal with Epitaph Records. Now, gearing up to release their debut EP “i’ll remember you for the same feeling you gave me as i slept” off the tails of a successful sold out headline tour, late night drive home are stopping at nothing, while also remembering their roots and growing up in rural america; just being able to create art for them is enough.

—LOLA KIRKE—Lola Kirke has played many roles as an actress (“Mozart in the Jungle,” “Gone Girl,” “Winning Time”), but as a musician her sights have always been set squarely on Country.

“I don’t totally get it either,” laughs the London born New York raised Kirke. “But I’ve always been drawn to dynamic parts for women, and I can’t think of any other genre where we can be mothers, heartbreakers, glamorous, gritty, drunk, tender, and everything in between all at once.”

She’s also just a sucker for the songwriting. “I wanted to know how I could make the most complicated feelings sound simple, or how to make the saddest things be fun or witty. Great Country just does that so well.”

After relocating from Los Angeles to Nashville in 2020, Kirke devoted herself to honing the craft she’d come to admire so deeply in artists like The Judds, The Pistol Annies, and Dolly Parton. Shortly thereafter, she released her critically acclaimed sophomore LP “Lady For Sale” on the much respected Third Man Records in 2022, and played sold out shows with the likes of Jenny Lewis, and Margo Price.

In her downtime, Kirke threw herself into writing, both on her own and with others. “I was nervous a lot of people in Nashville wouldn’t take me seriously. There’s so much talent there. I was intimidated. Plus while being a musician turned actor is kind of chic, the other way around can be kind of cringey—even to me. Also growing up Jewish and singing Country isn’t exactly a normal trajectory, so I felt I had a lot working against me.”

But Kirke’s commitment and talent were clear enough to hitmakers like Aaron Ratiere (Miranda Lambert), Mary Kutter (Bailey Zimmerman, Nate Smith), and Jason Nix (Lainey Wilson), with whom she wrote the bulk of her latest EP “Country Curious.”

To achieve the more contemporary sound Kirke envisioned (“I was kind of like—what would happen if I wrote ‘Bro Country’ but for girls?” she says, only half jokingly), she enlisted the Grammy nominated, chart topping Elle King, who’d been itching make her debut as a producer. “I knew she’d be the right fit. She always been so supportive of me and I’ve always loved how she blends her roots rock sound with a real pop sensibility.” Their lifelong friendship made the collaboration even more of a shoe in. “She was the first girl I knew singing Country in New York City!” Kirke beams when talking about King.

If Kirke’s doubts about her place in music didn’t dwindle after First Aid Kit invited her on tour and jump on board to feature on the EP’s first single, “All My Exes Live in LA,” one can imagine it’s only a matter of time. “Lola is a stunning combination of wildness, beauty, and humor, with a voice that digs inside my head and heart,” says the legendary Rosanne Cash, one of Kirke’s all time heroes, and her collaborator on “Karma.”

“I honestly adore this woman and count myself both a friend and her biggest fan.” Cash continues.

After listening to Kirke sing, or catching one of her effervescent live shows, you’ll be hard pressed to disagree.

For Joy Again, inspiration indiscriminately bounces around like a superball. It ping-pongs between the Philadelphia band before it settles and crystallizes in one capriciously catchy bop after another. These six lo-fi alternative pop outliers—Sachi DiSerafino [vocals, guitar], Arthur Shea [vocals, guitar], Blaise O’Brien [keys], Zachary Tyndall [keys], Will Butera [drums], and Kieran Ferris[bass]—draw hooks and melodies from the most unexpected corners as they create without limitations or boundaries. Their music has become indie anthems for millions of listeners, and sparked creativity and new ideas for countless fans.

Joy Again has cultivated a strong following across the country with over 2.8 million monthly listeners on spotify alone. Fans have created over 1 million tiktok videos using Joy Again songs, “Looking Out For You” charted at 13 on TikTok’s Top 200. The band has created their following in part by touring across the country with the likes of Wallows, Snail Mail, Rostam, and Metronomy to name a few. A strong core of fans have followed the band through several iterations, they have created a folk-lore like aura to the bands history and discography.

The long short of Joy Again’s origin story is this: During ninth grade, Arthur reached out to Sachi on Facebook, “because he posted about Jimi Hendrix”. Blaise was another Facebook find (thanks Mark). Tyndall and Sachi worked at a coffee shop together. Kieran went to boarding school with Arthur and Sachi. Will and Arthur are 2nd cousins, which they both forgot about until meeting again through Kieran.

After a summer and fall filled with writing and recording, the band is eager to show their new album to their fans and to the world. Each song is better than the next, and the song following it is twice as good, forming some sort of M.C. Escher-like musical journey.

–SLOW HOLLOWS–After a three-year hiatus, Slow Hollows returns reinvented, sharing new single & video “Old Yeller.” The genre-defying Los Angeles band founded by songwriter Austin Feinstein is now his solo project. Though the group amicably disbanded in early 2020, the now 25-year-old artist never stopped writing songs. The more he fleshed out new material, the more Feinstein realized it made sense to continue on as Slow Hollows. “Ultimately making a cohesive record was themost important thing to me,” says Feinstein. “Having some time away from the band made me realize what ‘Slow Hollows’ stood for. It’s hard to realize what you’re getting at when you’re doing it, so the time to myself helped me understand what made it work.”

In sharp contrast to 2019’s Actors, which interpolated R&B and dance music and was influenced by collaborations with Frank Ocean (Feinstein sings the chorus on Blonde’s “Self Control”) and Tyler, the Creator (who crafted the beat for Actors’ “Heart”), “Old Yeller” focuses purely on Feinstein’s songwriting, stripping things back to only an acoustic guitar, his voice, and gentle atmospherics. “Old Yeller was recorded in two or three takes one afternoon in September ‘22” shares Feinstein, “The lyrics take inspiration from the job of an old vacuum cleaner; feeling dusty and worn down, working over the same familiar spaces over and over again, until reaching the point of frustration and resignation. Taking production inspiration from John Cale, we decided to add a drone underneath the track.”

Describing the recording process, Lawrence shares, “The Plow That Broke the Plains” is me not hiding behind any persona or mask and just being myself and putting that uncensored self into the words and recordings no matter how painful the confrontation was.

—UPSAHL—Early in her career, UPSAHL released songs that gained much-deserved recognition throughout the Phoenix music scene. As a graduate of the Arizona School for the Arts, she went on to ignite a groundswell of fan adoration and tastemaker praise by way of numerous indie alternative gems. “Can You Hear Me Now” achieved a palpable viral buzz followed by the widely praised single “Drugs,” which has been used in nearly two million TikTok videos, reaching #6 on the Viral Chart and the #1 Sound on the Trends Chart.

2020 was a standout year where UPSAHL released her second EP Young Life Crisis, which Billboard crowned as one of the Top 25 Pop albums of the year. UPSAHL undertook her first co-write on “Good in Bed” for Dua Lipa’s GRAMMY Award-winning blockbuster, Future Nostalgia, and lent her pen to Madison Beer on her fiery single “BOYSHIT,” as well as Mike Shinoda’s upbeat anthem “Happy Endings,” which featured herself and iann dior. UPSAHL has also collaborated with Anne-Marie and Little Mix on “Kiss My (Uh Oh).” Most recently, UPSAHL joined forces with GAYLE on her track “e-z,” was featured on the star-studded film Bullet Train soundtrack, with the song “My Time to Shine,” co-wrote three songs on Renee Rapp’s latest EP Everything To Everyone, and was featured on NGHTMRE’s single “ATMOSPHERE” from debut DRMVRSE. Her latest collaboration with Alan Walker on the single “Shut Up,” which UPSAHL co-wrote and is featured on, steadily climbs various charts around the world.

In the fall of 2021, UPSAHL released her debut album Lady Jesus, anointing the singer as one of People Magazine’s “Talented Emerging Artists Making Their Mark in 2022” and “a musical force to be reckoned with” (Nylon). It was followed by the powerful statement-making “Monica Lewinsky,” a feminist anthem, in addition to “Antsy,” and “Into My Body off her star-sign inspired EP Sagittarius out today. The EP provides an introspective glimpse into her fiery persona and pay homage to her sign.

The latest EP follows on the heels of UPSAHL’s highly successful debut headline tour, where she sold out venues across the US, and then continued on an expansive international tour, which included Australia, the UK and Europe.. Her high-octane performance style has also earned her spots on major festival lineups, including Lollapalooza, and tour support for acts including Yungblud, FLETCHER, K. Flay, BROODS, Olivia O’Brien and PVRIS.

—DEAD POET SOCIETY—Asked what it is he wants audiences to take away from “FISSION,” the forthcoming second album from Dead Poet Society, Jack Underkofler offers eight small but powerful words: “We want to leave them with the truth.”

The affable and engaging 30-year-old delivers these words with the forthrightness that marks his discussions about the band he fronts, completed by Jack Collins (guitar), Will Goodroad (drums), and Dylan Brenner (bass), and the art this collective of college friends have exhaustively dedicated themselves moulding, too often to their own detriment.

It’s an answer that epitomizes the dedication with which the quartet approaches their craft, and the search for its purest, most meaningful form. “It’s not as simple as saying we want our music to leave people with a positive outlook,” Underkofler explains. “You want music to speak to wherever you find yourself. We want to leave people feeling that whatever they are experiencing is valid, no matter what place they are at in their lives.”

After a decade defining, redefining, and perfecting their art, where Dead Poet Society finds themselves on the eve of their sophomore release is much clearer. Make no mistake: Dead Poet Society is a uniquely captivating group, rock’s next great breakout act, with “FISSION” set to capture the hearts and challenge the minds of fans old and new on the journey ahead.

Following on the heels of their acclaimed debut full-length “–!–“ (2021), “FISSION” seeks to unpack the personal journey its creators have been on during that ride to date. “FISSION,” as its title hints, is a 13-track study of personal change and the turbulence of growth that, as Underkofler attests, takes “a microscopic and broad look at the events that changed who we are.” To that end, there are deep rakings over the coals of relationship breakdowns, examinations of addiction in all its guises, ruminations on the responsibilities and challenges of adulthood, and struggles with the evolution, loss, and continual search for self. “In a lot of ways, this album is about unpacking those emotional pains that come with being an adult,” Underkofler says.

“The past few years have left me in a constant state of growth through the life events of which I’ve had little control, or which didn’t pan out the way I wanted them to,” the frontman admits. “There’s a ‘before’ you, and an ‘after’ you, and there’s no going back. Life tends to force your hand, and it’s futile to fight it. You have to accept that things that happen to you will change you, and let them build you into the next phase of who you are.

“There is a constant battle to not mourn who I was because the things you go through define you as a person and turn you into a person worth being,” he adds. “But that can be difficult to wrestle with. There is a positive to it, but it is birthed through a lot of pain.”

“It’s both exciting – ‘Fuck you. I’m gonna take this head-on’ – and at the same time, you’re terrified how you’re going to get through the next month,” adds Goodroad. “One day you’re super confident about where life is going, the next you’re second-guessing everything. It’s like the myth of Sisyphus: it’s a boulder you have to push up the hill every day.”

Twinned lead singles “Running In Circles” and “Hurt” weave through fears of following the wrong path while hiding behind false fronts. “How Could I Love You” and “I Hope You Hate Me” tackle the sometimes bittersweet, more often simply bitter fallout from a tumultuous relationship. “81 Tonnes,” meanwhile, sees Underkofler revisit a time of particular helplessness and instability. ’I need peace now slow my body down can you pull me out?’ he pleads. ‘Too afraid of fission and faith to save me from myself.’

It’s that track which gave guitarist Collins his clearest understanding of the emotions he and his bandmates share, which were coming to the fore in the song. “Jack described “81 Tonnes” to us as about being left with ‘a permanently altered state of mind,’ which felt like the perfect summary of so many of those songs on the album to me,” he says. ”They all lead you to the finish line of, ‘I’m a different person now because of all this…’”

To some extent, through “FISSION”’s creation, Dead Poet Society has become a different band, too. A more attuned one; more accomplished, certainly. “We were really trying to define our sound more on this record,” Collins nods. “We worked a lot more on guitar tones, bass tones, and drum sounds, and paid close attention to melody. The aim was to make our sound bigger – we wanted a more dynamic record, where you could hear the best representation of us live. I feel like the evolution is us maturing a little bit, and wanting to create a sound that was less an obvious reflection of our influences – Muse, Queens Of The Stone Age, Nothing But Thieves, Royal Blood – and more definitively our own. We don’t control where the inspiration comes from. We just had to obey the songs and what they were telling us to do next.”

“We hone in on a feeling, rather than a sound,” adds Underkofler. “This album is the defining moment of when we truly became Dead Poet Society. It’s the closest we’ve come to realizing the essence of the ideas we’ve always had for this band.”

The result is a compelling record of depth and substance, which weaves through the spectrum of anthemic alternative, dark hard rock, and progressive indie. “FISSION“ is at once comfortingly familiar and disconcertingly alien; raw and analogue – “Profoundly human,” as Goodroad says – while possessing a colder, digital inflection. Unexpected turns and deviations reveal themselves often; repeat listens reveal greater secrets yet. It’s a multifaceted record of contrast and cohesion, on which the bright glow of the ballad “Tipping Point” and album-highlight “My Condition” – the sort of infuriatingly hooky earworm anthem with which alternative radio airwaves are dominated – can coalesce with the industrial-leaning mechanics of the piston-driven “Hard To Be God” and “KOET.”

“I think the best way to make other people feel something is to make yourself feel something. The best songwriters are people who can take a particular emotion and feeling and create the most narrow translation when someone hears that song,” Underkofler says. “If someone hearing a song can be taken to the exact headspace that the person who wrote it was in at the time, for me, that is the mark of a great songwriter. And I feel with these songs, we’ve achieved that better than we ever have before.”

It’s a headspace you’re left to ruminate in long after Underkofler is finished protesting ‘But what if I’m always alone? / And I don’t like who I am anymore’ on the closing “Black And Gold”. Because when all is said and done, the truth is that the impact of “FISSION” and Dead Poet Society willreverberate now and in years to come.

Club Congress

From its 1985 inception as a once-weekly showcase for downtown Tucson’s creative community, to its current status as one of the “10Best” around, Club Congress has rightfully earned its reputation as the epicenter of southern Arizona’s arts and music scene.

Hundreds of events are featured annually between its venerable indoor club stage, and the larger outdoor plaza stage. Through the years, Club Congress has featured a multitude of local and national artists including Nirvana, No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sia,The 1975, and Imagine Dragons to name just a few.

Club Congress is a southwest staple that has earned repeated accolades as a “10Best” as well as Tucson’s best dance club and remains an iconic venue for top-level talent.
