Ashley Kahn | Miles Davis at 100

($30-$40 | 6:30pm & 8:30pm Shows) A centennial reflection on Miles Davis, one of the most transformative figures in twentieth-century music, led by acclaimed historian Ashley Kahn. From the cool restraint of Birth of the Cool through the modal innovations of Kind of Blue to the electric upheaval of Bitches Brew, Davis continually redefined the language of jazz, assembling forward-looking ensembles and reshaping the role of the bandleader as curator, catalyst, and disruptor.

Ashley Kahn:

Born in the Bronx and educated at Columbia University, Kahn has built a career documenting the inner workings of landmark recordings and the artists behind them. His work includes definitive books on Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme, as well as Grammy-winning liner notes for Offering: Live at Temple University and Miles ’55: The Prestige Recordings. His writing combines historical precision with close attention to the musical decisions that shaped these recordings.

This program situates Davis’s work within a broader musical and social context, examining how each phase of his career reframed improvisation, production, and audience expectation. Through Kahn’s perspective, the music emerges as a continuous process of reinvention. For this performance, Kahn will be joined by Jason Carder (trumpet) Morani Sanders (trumpet) Cameron Davidson (trumpet) Max Goldschmid (trumpet) Angelo Versace (piano) Colin McIlrath (bass) Arthur Vint (drums)
