For over a century, the Hotel Congress has stood at the heart of Tucson, a living witness to the city’s history—and to those who refuse to leave it behind. Built in 1919, the hotel was designed for travelers stepping off the Southern Pacific line, with guest rooms, a café, a beauty shop, a barber, and the now-famous Tap Room bar. Yet beneath the grandeur of its architecture lies something far older: the land itself has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years, making Tucson one of North America’s oldest, and most haunted, living communities.

On this 30-minute walking tour, you’ll be let in on the hotel’s best-kept secrets. Meet the lace-shrouded lady of the staircase, drifting through the lobby trailing the faint scent of roses; the Victorian Gentleman in Room 214, quietly surveying the plaza in seersucker and top hat; the Locksmith’s Apprentice, tinkering at unseen locks; Vince, the butter-knife handyman, still tending to his work decades after his passing; and the Lady in White, whose presence has startled more than a few male guests. You’ll even hear the story of infamous bank robber John Dillinger, who passed through Hotel Congress in 1934 before a fire exposed his gang’s presence and led to his capture—without a single shot fired.

The tour wraps up in the rarely seen séance room, a space of quiet reflection, lingering echoes, and centuries of footsteps—perfect for anyone curious enough to step just a little closer to the unexplained. It’s more than a ghost tour; it’s a backstage pass to a living portrait of Hotel Congress, where history, humanity, and spirits mingle in plain sight.

Please note: the elevator was destroyed in the famous 1934 fire—guests must climb one flight of stairs to reach the haunted rooms.

($20-$30 + DICE fees | 4:30pm matinee) Michael Ragonese, a highly accomplished jazz pianist and composer based in Los Angeles, has been immersed in music for over 25 years. Born and raised in LA, his musical journey began with classical piano and later evolved into a deep passion for jazz during his high school years. This pivotal shift led him to pursue a degree in jazz piano at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), where he earned top honors at festivals like Reno and Monterey and was recognized as an outstanding soloist.

Ragonese has become one of the most sought-after young pianists of his generation, performing, touring, and recording with legends such as Barbra Streisand, Walter Smith III, Ben Wendel, Mark Turner, Charnett Moffett, Bennie Maupin, Dave Koz, Rick Braun, Norman Brown, Alphonso Johnson, John Daversa, Tierney Sutton, Stanley Jordan, Engelbert Humperdinck, Sue Raney, Tom Jones, Shoshana Bean, Dave Binney, Bob Sheppard, and more.

Ragonese made his debut as a leader in 2019 with the release of Day to Day, featuring Walter Smith III. His second album, Stracci, arrived in 2023, honoring his Italian heritage and classical background. His third album as a leader, Chasing Calm, was releaased on October 10, 2025. The record showcases his quartet featuring Walter Smith III, JK Kim, and Luca Alemanno and represents his most personal and reflective work yet, blending modern jazz, classical textures, and complex rhythmic ideas.

For this matinee find Michael paired with locals Colin McIlrath and Arthur Vint.

($50 + DICE fees | 6pm-8pm) Come support the Sonora Arts & Music Initiative 501(c)3 by participating in their Fall Fundraiser! Included in the event ticket is live music from the University of Arizona Jazz Ambassadors, hors d’oeuvres from the Cup Café and sparkling wine from of the Century Room, all provided courtesy of the Sonora Arts & Music Initiative board of directors. Come raise a glass and support live jazz in Tucson! All donations are tax deductible and will be matched up to $25,000, thanks to a generous anonymous donor!

If you are unable to attend, you can still purchase a ticket or make a donation through sonoraarts.org.

The Sonora Arts & Music Initiative’s mission is to promote creative & innovative music by supporting the artists who create it and expanding audiences through performance, education, & advocacy. One way that SAMI does this is through financial support of two of the Century Room’s community based programs: their Sunday night jam session, which provides space for young musicians to experiment, innovate, and develop their skills, and their Monday night Jazz Orchestra, which is intergenerational ensemble that fosters community between students, teachers and professionals while keeping big band music of the 20th Century alive. Without SAMI’s financial support, these programs would not be possible.

Additionally, SAMI has made possible the ability for patrons to underwrite touring national artists to come perform at the Century Room by supporting Signature Concert artist fees and travel expenses. There are several Signature Concerts coming up in 2026 that will be presented by SAMI at the Century Room, and you can help expand the programming by sponsoring an artist!

In 2026, SAMI hopes to also provide video and streaming equipment to the Century Room, help with instrument maintenance, and support more shows by both local musicians and national artists. Find out more information at www.sonoraarts.org/whatwedo.

If you can’t make the date, but would still like to support SAMI’s mission, you can purchase a “Cannot Attend” ticket here, or make a donation via our website www.sonoraarts.org/donate. All funds will go towards support live jazz in Southern Arizona.

Los Angeles based “Freak Americana” project, Dutch Interior, brings collaborative and earnest songwriting under a veil of classic Americana melancholy for their latest album, Blinded by Fame, the six-piece’s first release since 2021’s demo album Kindergarten.

Dutch Interior began as an aimless, decentralized recording project shared between longtime friends in the isolation of early 2020 centered around an 8-track set up on their living room floor. At this point, there was no band, there were no members, no one had an official instrument, there was no “lead singer”, and there was never any intention of releasing anything concrete.

Post-COVID, the formation of a coherent lineup of full time members saw the band play their first round of live shows and begin work on their second album, Blinded by Fame. Recorded and produced by Dutch Interior in their home studio via an 8-track tape machine & board, the band leaned into the limitations of analog recording techniques to create a stripped back & earnest sound.

($10-$20 + DICE Fees | 6:30pm Show) Welcome back Bisbee-based early jazz experts Juniper Djinn to the Century Room!

JUNIPER DJINN

Clarinet dreamscapes amongst a sea of melodious waltzes, the billowing sounds of early American jazz, gypsy jazz, and Balkan folk music make up the core sounds of Juniper Djinn. The duos originals reflect a familiar feeling of 30s & 40s nostalgia and timeless tunes ingrained deep within traditional American and European jazz. The duo is best known for their live performances in which they play an array of genres spanning across decades of time and regularly features other musicians from across the globe.

Singer, clarinet player, and rhythm guitarist Jessica Fleet is the main vocal of the group with a voice that has been described as an angel and a demon singing in harmony with her powerful vocals, dynamic vocal range, and deep growl. Famed Baby Gramps quoted her as his “favorite singer” and compared her to the great Bessie Johnson. “That voice is a force of nature and hearing it’s a bright balm shining like a birth cake emerging from a dark wood”. – Charlie Unhau

Multi-instrumentalist Bill Stoller is the other half of the duo with his incredible, studious guitar playing, rhythmic accompaniment, accordion and upright bass on the duos albums. With over a decade of experience playing in different bands and touring Juniper Djinn brings a transformative atmosphere of sound and musicians with each and every show.

The Wrecks instigate an immediate reaction. Thanks to an idiosyncratic and infectious D.I.Y. approach to alternative pop, fans not only hang on to the group’s sticky hooks for dear life, but they also sing along to every word (as loudly as possible) at packed headline shows. The Los Angeles-based band—Nick Anderson [vocals, guitar, keyboard, production], Nicholas “Schmizz” Schmidt [lead guitar], Aaron Kelley [bass], and William “Billy” Nally [drums]—helm every facet of their vision, writing, producing, and cooking up a homegrown signature sound without comparison. As such, the quartet deliver an insanely immersive experience for their diehard audience at shows, within songs, and even on social media. Buoyed by this response, they have sold tens of thousands of tickets and independently stacked up nearly 300 million total streams across songs like “Favorite Liar,” (Top 40 Alternative Single) “Fvck Somebody,” and “Freaking Out” (which spent 23 weeks on SiriusXM’s Alt Nation 18 Peaking at #3 and was also a Top 40 Alternative Single) as well as two full-length offerings, namely Infinitely Ordinary [2020] and Sonder [2022]. Of the latter, EUPHORIA. raved, “There’s also some real versatility on the record,” and Wonderland. added, “The sweet sounds of indie-rock are unparalleled, and four-piece The Wrecks are crashing back onto the scene to prove it.” OnesToWatch went as far as to proclaim, “The Wrecks should be your new favorite alternative rock band.” Sonder also appeared on Spotify’s Top 10 USA Album Debut Chart. Last year the guys signed to Lava/Republic Records, kicking off another chapter in the process. It begins with the arrestingly catchy, yet wonderfully off-kilter lead single “Always, Everytime” and “Speed” and the release of INSIDE :. Let The Wrecks take up residence in your head now. You won’t want them to leave.

How Embarrassing Is Jesus? is a standup-flavored fifty minutes in which idiot journalist Lauren Duca investigates the meaning of life just as soon as she can look through the crowd to see if her parents are there. After going viral for publishing “Donald Trump is Gaslighting America” to Teen Vogue, Duca was profiled in The New York Times and canceled by Buzzfeed before running off to the mountains to join a psychedelic cult, where she was saved by a rainbow alien praying mantis named Jesus, and this show has to ask, “How weird is that?” An exploration of internet culture and “God” that could only be created by someone who has been completely destroyed, this trippy comedy goes beyond the religious and political to create a down-to-Earth conversation about the expansion of consciousness and the way we pay attention.

Tucson Jazz Festival Presents A Special Out-of-Festival Event

Southern Arizona-based guitarist Gabriel Ayala, a member of the Yaqui people, stands at the forefront of a new generation of Native American musicians, forging his own path across genres from classical and flamenco to his self-styled “JazzMenco.” With a Master’s Degree in Music Performance from the University of Arizona and a global touring résumé that includes performances at the Kennedy Center and the canonization of St. Kateri Tekakwitha before Pope Benedict XVI, Ayala’s artistry is both deeply rooted and internationally recognized.

In this special concert, Ayala will perform original solo compositions and be joined by Tucson-based pianist Khris Dodge, creating an intimate musical dialogue that celebrates tradition, community, and resilience. This performance is dedicated to Ayala’s son Melikos, who is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor—contributions to support the family’s medical expenses will be welcomed during the event.

Join us at The Century Room for a heartfelt afternoon of music that blends precision and improvisation, cultural heritage and contemporary expression—a unique opportunity for those who love jazz at its most soulful and sincere.
