Season to Risk are an indie noise rock band from Kansas City, Missouri formed in 1989 by singer Steve Tulipana, guitarist Duane Trower and bass player Paul Malinowski (Shiner). They met while playing hardcore shows at legendary punk venue The Outhouse in high school years and formed Season to Risk in college. Season to Risk built an audience for their genre-bending (post-hardcore, noise rock, math rock) music by touring relentlessly, playing shows as a young band with legends like Killing Joke, Prong, Killdozer, and the Melvins. The band toured constantly throughout North America, returning home briefly for a few days or weeks. Early songs were written with Tim Dow of Shiner drumming.

($20-$30 Tickets + DICE fees | 6:30pm & 8:30pm Shows) Bruce Amory Halper is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose work is shaped by his New York City roots, his international travels, and his lifelong passion for The Great American Songbook. Come hear Bruce swing through classics from Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Barbara Streisand and more.

Bruce Halper (vocals) Angelo Versace (piano) Thøger Tentens Lund (bass) Arthur Vint (drums) + Special Guests!

He began his musical journey at the age of eleven, studying piano, drums, and voice, and performing at New York’s Hoffmann School. By sixteen, he was drumming and singing professionally in Tucson, Arizona—already recording jingles and performing live. In his twenties, he became a sought-after sideman, playing and recording with artists who had audiences around the globe.

Halper’s career highlights include playing with Rainer Ptacek and his band Das Combo, and a two-decade run with the “quintessential desert rock band” the Sidewinders (later renamed the Sandrubies). With the Sidewinders, he recorded two albums for RCA and another for Polygram, earning critical acclaim and reaching No. 5 on Billboard’s college radio charts.

Following European tours in 1999 and 2000 with the Sidewinders and legendary bassist Mike Davis (MC5), Halper began collaborating with the duo Colwell—a musical partnership that continues to this day.

In 2001, Halper launched his solo career as a vocalist and bandleader, performing classic jazz and popular songs with some of the finest musicians in the jazz community. His repertoire draws from the rich legacy of 20th-century American music.

Over the years, Halper has been recognized not only for his musicianship, but also for his charisma and artistic range. He has been described as a “bon vivant” by The Arizona Daily Star and “a renaissance man” by Tucson Weekly.

Bruce is currently collaborating with bassist and musical director Thøger Tetens Lund and a talented circle of jazz artists and vocalists. He plans to record a new album featuring a blend of jazz and pop material, and tour alongside some of his longtime musical partners. Whether on stage or in the studio, Halper continues to share his love of timeless music, bringing soul and style to every performance.

“When Halper sings about life and love, you know he’s lived it. He’s speaking directly to your heart and soul.” (Naim Amor)

Celebrate The Great Gatsby’s 100th birthday with us! Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has long been hailed as one of the great American novels. A quintessentially American story of money and love, of class and desire, of wealth and the deceptive shimmer of success, The Great Gatsby continues to impress readers as both a depiction of jazz-age opulence and an excavation of its causes and consequences. We invite you to step into Fitzgerald’s brilliantly crystalline prose and experience The Great Gatsby first hand in an immersive evening designed to bring words to life. Featuring live music from The Genevra Kings, burlesque from Queerd Science (acts from Like Candy & Doxy Divine), readings by the 1920’s Poetry Salon, drink specials, giveaways, a costume contest, dancers, and performances from the stage play, The Great Gatsby birthday party offers an opportunity to live a jazz-age dream. Costumes are encouraged, so wear your favorite 1920’s finery.

The Great Gatsby: An Immersive Birthday Party is presented with The UA Reading Initiative. The UA Reading Initiative was formed in 2024 in response to the perceived need to study and promote reading as a crucial skill in the current moment of AI, digital technology, and short-attention media. For more information or to get involved, please contact Paul Hurh (jphurh@arizona.edu) or Johanna Skibsrud (jskibsrud@arizona.edu).

RETRO GAME SHOW NIGHT: 14th ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR

Doors 6pm | Show 7pm | 18+

Retro Game Show Night turns fourteen, and we’re celebrating like a show that refuses to age gracefully. Tucson’s longest-running live comedy show is marking this milestone with a fast, ferocious, no-nonsense anniversary episode – and yes, we’re bringing the chaos.

Back by overwhelming audience obsession is “You Don’t Say” – our turbo-charged, Taboo-on-acid word game that melts brains, frays nerves, and somehow keeps everyone begging for more.

Your guide through the madness is Chatty Kathee, with executive assistant Swish Manley running the operation with the kind of competence that terrifies the rest of us.

Our all-star cast returns, sharper and sillier than ever:

• Bernaise – drama personified, legally classified as “too much”

• Nelmar 23 McGee – interdimensional wildcard with suspicious wisdom

• Parker – sleek, sly, and professionally unbothered

• Fireman Todd – hotter than the situations he responds to

Fourteen years in, and we’re only getting more unhinged.

Haunted Hotel Tours will be available until Dec. 28th

– Sundays at 2pm
– Run Time: 30 minutes

Adults $15 | Kids $10

For over a century, the Hotel Congress has stood at the heart of Tucson, a living witness to the city’s history—and to those who refuse to leave it behind. Built in 1919, the hotel was designed for travelers stepping off the Southern Pacific line, with guest rooms, a café, a beauty shop, a barber, and the now-famous Tap Room bar. Yet beneath the grandeur of its architecture lies something far older: the land itself has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years, making Tucson one of North America’s oldest, and most haunted, living communities.

On this 30-minute walking tour, you’ll be let in on the hotel’s best-kept secrets. Meet the lace-shrouded lady of the staircase, drifting through the lobby trailing the faint scent of roses; the Victorian Gentleman in Room 214, quietly surveying the plaza in seersucker and top hat; the Locksmith’s Apprentice, tinkering at unseen locks; Vince, the butter-knife handyman, still tending to his work decades after his passing; and the Lady in White, whose presence has startled more than a few male guests. You’ll even hear the story of infamous bank robber John Dillinger, who passed through Hotel Congress in 1934 before a fire exposed his gang’s presence and led to his capture—without a single shot fired.

The tour wraps up in the rarely seen séance room, a space of quiet reflection, lingering echoes, and centuries of footsteps—perfect for anyone curious enough to step just a little closer to the unexplained. It’s more than a ghost tour; it’s a backstage pass to a living portrait of Hotel Congress, where history, humanity, and spirits mingle in plain sight.

Please note: the elevator was destroyed in the famous 1934 fire—guests must climb one flight of stairs to reach the haunted rooms.

($10-$15 + DICE fees | 6:30pm & 8pm Sets) Nick Coventry, Matt Mitchell, Evan Dain & Marco Rosano form the swinging Hot Club of Tucson Trio! The group plays jazz manouche in the style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappeli. The band starts at 6:30pm. Every 2nd Wednesday!

Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli were pivotal figures in the development of jazz in Europe, particularly through their groundbreaking work with the Quintette du Hot Club de France in the 1930s. Reinhardt, a Belgian-born Romani guitarist, overcame a debilitating hand injury to pioneer a unique style of jazz guitar that combined virtuosic speed, expressive phrasing, and gypsy musical traditions. Grappelli, a classically trained French violinist, brought elegance and melodic sophistication to jazz improvisation, helping elevate the violin as a serious jazz instrument. Together, their collaboration fused American swing with European sensibilities, laying the foundation for what became known as “Gypsy Jazz” and influencing generations of musicians worldwide.

***”Hot Jazz Wednesdays”** take you back to the roots of jazz with music from the 1920s and ’30s. Every 2nd Wednesday is reserved for the Hot Club of Tucson, which performs French Jazz Manouche in the style of Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli. Every 4th Wednesday features Marco & The Polos performing music from New Orleans & Chicago.*

THE NUTCRACKER SUITE

The original cover for the 1960 big band album, “The Nutcracker Suite,” presented three people as the authors, all with equal font size and inhabiting the same line: “Ellington. Strayhorn. “A trumpeter, vocalist, writer and arranger with a swaggering soul and the chops to back up the panache.” — allaboutjazz.com

Emmy-nominated Trumpeter and Vocalist Benny Benack III (BBIII) has quickly become a leading voice in Jazz for his generation, headlining clubs and festivals around the world on the heels of his latest critically acclaimed live album “This Is The Life,” which has been garnering thousands of streams and topping the JazzWeek Radio Charts. He is the rare talent who is formidable as a fiery trumpeter — ranging from Freddie Hubbard to Louis Armstrong and everyone in between — while as a singer he delivers sly, mature, naturally expressive post-Sinatra vocal stylings.

His sophomore album “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” (2020) featured the likes of bass luminary Christian McBride, achieving viral online fame w/his vocalese rendition of “Social Call,” ft. Veronica Swift, which has been transcribed and covered by singers around the world. He has crooned his way to millions more listeners alongside groups such as the Grammy-winning “8-Bit Big Band” and YouTube sensation “Postmodern Jukebox”. His 2023 album “Third Time’s the Charm” went all the way to #2 on the charts, and featured a notable line-up of special guests such as Peter Bernstein, Bria Skonberg, Chad LB, and more.

Benny’s double-threat credentials were first apparent when he was a finalist in the 2014 Thelonius Monk Competition on trumpet, before going on to win Third Place in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. His resume for both was recently bolstered by Downbeat Magazine’s Readers Poll for 2025, where he placed #1 for Rising Star Male Vocalist, and was also #8 for Rising Star Trumpet.

BBIII’s global recognition has been bolstered by his collaborations with the GRAMMY-award winning “8-Bit Big Band,” as well as touring with Postmodern Jukebox. The recent advent of live-streaming concerts has also proved a boon, both through his residency at Smalls Jazz Club, and frequent appearances at fellow superstar Emmet Cohen’s “Emmet’s Place” online series. Benny has established himself as one of the most in-demand touring artists and music educators in the Jazz world, with a seemingly unending intercontinental schedule reflecting his indefatigable love for the music, and with his smile and panache ever on display wherever he goes.

($25-$35 Tickets + DICE fees | 6:30pm & 8:30pm Shows) Century Room favoritre and triple threat Benny Benack III returns to front the 17-piece Century Jazz Orchestra on Monday! He’ll be singing, swinging and blowing trumpet in frotn of Tucson’s premiere big band!

($25-$35 + DICE fees | 6:30pm Show) Multiple award-winning jazz star from Denmark, Sinne Eeg, is captivating audiences around the world. Sinne will be performing with American pianist and arranger Josh Nelson (Natalie Cole, Ivan Lins, Kurt Elling), with whom she regularly tours in both Denmark and USA. Concert goers are mesmerized by this swinging Danish songstress’ confident intonation, her strong rhythmic sense and her talent for phrasing and scatting, all with natural, perfect pitch and a dark, Scandinavian smoothness in her voice.

Sinne has a rare ability to empathize and she is not afraid to take chances on the stage. This can be experienced in joyful extravaganza in both her phrasing and her superior scat improvisations. Eeg is a masterful interpreter of the American Songbook as well as a highly skilled composer, evident in her beautiful compositions. Add Sinne´s legendary good mood and the complete concert experience is guaranteed.

Sinne Eeg has released 12 albums under her own name, 5 of which have been awarded a Danish Music Award for Best Vocal Release of the Year. Over the years, Sinne Eeg has received many awards and recognitions, including the Ben Webster Prize, Queen Ingrid’s Honorary Legate, Jazz Special’s “Danish Jazz Release of the Year” and “Palmares” – the French jazz critics’ award for “International Vocal Release of the Year”. In March 2025 Sinne was awarded the French Order of Knighthood “Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” which is the French state’s honor for merits in the fields of art, culture and literature.

“Sinne Eeg gave a perfect lesson in the art of jazz singing at Dizzy´s Club in New York. In the modern era, when most jazz singers draw from the pop canon simply as a matter of survival, Eeg makes no such allowances. She possesses exceptional technique power, good taste, enunciation, control, earned wisdom – and knows how to work a song for all it´s worth, sometimes holding out a final climactic note until the very end, wowing audiences with a single sustained word” – DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE

“Probably the best female jazz singer I have heard since legends such as Sarah Vaughan and Elle Fitzgerald” -MUSIC REPUBLIQUE MAGAZINE

($30-$40 Tickets + DICE fees | 6:30pm Presentation & 8pm Concert) The Century Room is thrilled to welcome back Grammy-winning author and jazz historian Ashley Kahn to kick off our celebration of Miles Davis’s centennial! Ashley will give a 75 minute presentation on the 1958/59 Miles Davis sextet following by a performance from Morani Sanders’ sextet! Presented in conjunction with the Tucson Jazz Music Foudnation.

Jazz is a tradition of individual heroes, but there are a few bands that were historic and all-star collections of talent. Miles Davis’ sextets of the late ‘50s were one of those rare, once-in-a-lifetime lineups, featuring John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Red Garland, Bill Evans, Philly Joe Jones, and others, all destined to become bandleaders and legends in their own right. Miles’ sextets recorded two of the most important of all jazz albums: Milestones and Kind of Blue: The first being Miles’ farewell to the era of bebop that his career had started in, and the second was the sound of the future, predicting the musical adventure that his career would become.

Who were these incredible sidemen, why and how did Miles choose them, and what about their music remains so fresh, modern and influential? These are the questions we will ask and answer, as we hear from Grammy-winning author Ashley Kahn, followed by the Morandi Sanders Sextet performing selections of this timeless music at The Century Room on Wednesday, January 15

Following great success at some of the world’s great jazz festivals and venues with her Tentet, GRAMMY-nominated Clarinetist and composer Anat Cohen shifts her focus to an intimate group sound with her newest band, the endlessly colorful Quartetinho (pronounced “quar-te-CHIN-yo,” i.e., little quartet).

The group of New York-based international multi-instrumentalist-virtuosos are all drawn from the ranks of her aforementioned Tentet featuring bassist Tal Mashiach, pianist/accordionist Vitor Gonçalves, and vibraphonist/percussionist James Shipp. The idea of instrumental doubling to achieve a wide stylistic range comes from the larger group, and the spirit of this cross-cultural/stylistic ensemble rings true throughout their performances. They share a deep love for music in all its heterogeneity and it’s all amply represented in both recordings and the band’s own live show. The result is boundlessly melodic and lyrical, with a wide array of timbres and subtle details of orchestration.

—TOGETHER PANGEA—Since they began jamming in William’s Santa Clarita bedroom, the Los Angeles rock trio Together Pangea—made up of William Keegan, Danny Bengston, and Erik Jimenez—has continually challenged itself with each album.

Jelly Jam (2010) poured the gasoline, Living Dummy (2011) struck the match, and Badillac (2014) lit the fire with its revved-up ’90s rock-inspired flames. Along the way, fan favorites like “Sick Shit,” “Badillac,” and “Offer” have racked up millions of Spotify streams. The group has also received support from publications like Consequence of Sound, Pitchfork, MTV, and Stereogum.

In 2015, they teamed up with The Replacements’ Tommy Stinson for The Phage EP, setting the stage for 2017’s Bulls and Roosters. That album showcased their evolution into a sharp, brash, and unapologetically confident rock band. With 2021’s DYE, they blended their past eras, drawing from the grunge-fueled chaos of Badillac, the ’50s pop undercurrent of Living Dummy, and the experimental edge of Bulls and Roosters. In 2024, they released the Misery EP, paving the way for what’s to come.

The band has since toured relentlessly, headlining across North America, the UK, and Europe, and sharing stages with Jimmy Eat World. Earlier this year, Together Pangea made their Coachella debut on the Sonora Stage. They also played a Coachella sideshow in Los Angeles at the El Rey with support from Prison Affair, marking another milestone in their career. Now, with a brand-new album slated for release next year, the band is gearing up for a new chapter.

Jenny Scheinman is an acclaimed violinist and composer who spent 13 years on the NYC downtown music scene, leading both her own bands, as well as working alongside artists ranging from Jason Moran to Brian Blade, Lucinda Williams to Lou Reed, among numerous others. The New York Times praised her “distinctive vision of American music, suffused with plainspoken beauty and fortified by country, gospel, and melting-pot folk, along with jazz and the blues.” Upon moving back to the Pacific

Northwest, Scheinman was reawakened to the extraordinary biodiversity of the region known as “The Lost Coast,” where she was raised, a stretch of mud-slide- and earthquake-prone coastline cut off from the main thoroughfares. This would ultimately inspire Scheinman to write All Species Parade, an epic and sprawling double album with an A-list ensemble, featuring guitarists Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Nels Cline, pianist Carmen Staaf, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Though the album does evoke a sense of pastoral wonder, it also strives to capture in Jenny’s words, “a charged relationship to nature, a feeling of being part of something bigger than ourselves, powerful, and fragile, and constantly changing. Something alive. With All Species Parade, I set out to musically reflect that experience of awe.”

Jenny Scheinman (violin) Carmen Staaf (piano) Tony Scherr (bass) Kenny Wollesen (drums)

JENNY SCHEINMAN

In addition to her extensive work in jazz and improvised music with Jason Moran, Brian Blade, Ron Miles and Allison Miller and many more, Jenny Scheinman has toured and recorded with songwriting legends such as Lucinda Williams, Bruce Cockburn, Robbie Fulks, Rodney Crowell, Lou Reed, Ani DiFranco and Joni Mitchell. She is featured on the original cast recording of Anais Mitchell’s hit musical Hadestown, and has written several feature length movie scores, including the forthcoming Avenue Of The Giants.

In March 2015 she premiered a multimedia performance at Duke University entitled Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait, which she continues to present in theaters around the country. On October 11 she will release her eleventh studio album All Species Parade as an epic double-vinyl celebration of wild biodiversity, featuring lifelong cohorts Carmen Staaf, Tony Scherr, Kenny Wollesen and the extraordinary guitarists Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Nels Cline.

This concert is sponsored in part by Elliot and Lorraine Glicksman.

Virtuoso pianist ELEW brings his electrifying Rockjazz style to Sting’s timeless catalog in ELEW Plays Sting. Fusing classical mastery, jazz improvisation, and raw energy, he transforms familiar hits into bold new creations. So compelling was his artistry that Sting invited him to open his My Songs 3.0 Tour.

ELEW

Every once in a while, an artist comes along who changes everything. Producing something completely new and meaningful, this person fills a void within the fabric of our culture—a hole we didn’t even know was there. Past generations have laid claim to this type of iconoclast—Liszt, Warhol, and Coltrane are among the artistic beacons of years gone by. Today, another joins their number—an innovator, musical revolutionary and unmatched performer: ELEW, aka Eric Robert Lewis. Fusing traditional jazz with elements of modern rock and pop, ELEW’s masterful originals and blistering re-interpretations have ignited the interest of the country’s tastemakers and those in the cultural know. But more than this, he possesses that ineffable spark that we only associate with true genius. Everything that he creates bears his singular mark—the stamp of something that we have never seen or heard, but have always wanted to feel.

Sparrow Smith, a multi-instrumentalist based in Marshall, NC, is well loved for her evocative songwriting, tasteful banjo playing, epic accordion chops, and striking outfits. A longtime member and leader of multiple bands (most notably Resonant Rogues) with Keith Josiah Smith, her husband and collaborator, Sparrow is stepping out under her own name with a new album of Appalachian originals. Her journey into old time started in her late teens with freight trains and Tommy Jarrell tapes, and her musical taste is also inspired by a lifelong love of dance. When not on tour, Sparrow can be found in the North Carolina mountains where she teaches Women’s Basic Carpentry and is building her own house from scratch.

Los Arcos Hermanos Peña stand as one of the most respected and long-standing family groups in Conjunto and Tejano music. Founded by Jerry Peña, a gifted accordionist, songwriter, and bandleader, the group has carried a rich musical tradition across three generations, performing throughout the United States and Mexico.

By the late 1970s, Jerry transformed the group into a family act, with his brothers, and now his sons and nephews carrying the Peña legacy forward. Over the decades, the band has recorded more than 38 full-length albums, blending heartfelt conjunto tradition with rhythmic innovation. Their dedication and musicianship have earned them a reputation for authenticity, excellence, and endurance in the genre.

After a short hiatus, Jerry led a triumphant comeback, regrouping Los Arcos Hermanos Peña with his sons and nephews—sparking one of the most successful eras in their history. Their hit single “Buena Suerte Corazon” became a record-breaking phenomenon, dominating radio charts and reaffirming their legendary status in conjunto music.

With over five decades of music, Los Arcos Hermanos Peña have become more than a band; they are a multigenerational force keeping the spirit of conjunto alive. Their music reflects love, faith, cultural pride, and family. Their journey embodies resilience and passion.

Today, under the direction of Jerry Peña, Los Arcos Hermanos Peña continue to inspire audiences with their timeless sound, award-winning performances, and devotion to the art of conjunto music.

In the kaleidoscopic world of music, 54 Ultra emerges as a beacon of sonic fusion, weaving synthy indie rock with a Latin soul heartbeat. Based out of New Jersey, 54 Ultra is the musical project of songwriter and producer JohnAnthony (Johnny) Rodriguez. Offering music that is both honest and melodic, with a charismatic stage presence to match, 54 Ultra is carving out a space uniquely his own, defined by a garage pop and soul sound.

Through a combination of interning in a New Jersey studio and self-teaching, Johnny built a solid foundation in music production before stepping into the spotlight with his own artist project. In early 2025, Johnny headed to Miami to work with Kali Uchis on her latest album, Sincerely, where he produced the track “All I Can Say.”

In 2024, he shared his debut single, “Where Are You,” which quickly gained traction online, introducing listeners to a sound that feels both timeless and fresh. A year later, he released his debut EP First Works, which Billboard named one of the Best Projects of the Year (So Far). The six-track collection features fan favorites like “Upside Down” and “No Tengo Valor”, and was followed by four sold-out shows in New York and Los Angeles.

Most recently, 54 Ultra shared “I Won’t Go,” a Spanglish synth ballad that further showcases his ability to blend emotional depth with vibrant, genre-blurring soundscapes.

Just a little over a year after releasing his first single, it was announced that 54 Ultra will perform at Coachella 2026. Leading up to the festival, he will be opening for Kali Uchis at her San Jose show, embarking on a nearly sold-out North American tour, and playing his first European headline shows in London, Amsterdam, and Paris, before closing out the year with a performance at Festival Color Caribe in Puerto Rico.
