The Century Jazz Orchestra: Charles Mingus at 103
($20-$30 tickets + taxes and fees | 6:30pm & 8pm sets) The Century Jazz Orchestra takes the stage to honor one of jazz’s most fearless innovators—Charles Mingus! Born on April 22, 1922, in Nogales, Arizona, Mingus has left a towering legacy of music that bridged hard bop, gospel, classical, and avant-garde traditions. Known as much for his thunderous bass playing as for his visionary compositions, Mingus crafted works that are deeply emotional, politically charged, and always rhythmically vibrant. From the joyous swing of “Better Get It in Your Soul” to the angry urgency of “Haitian Fight Song,” his music remains as relevant and provocative as ever. This evening’s performance features arrangements written for the Mingus Big Band which span Mingus’s remarkable career.
