—SPORTS TEAM— “Feels like driving a throne / Immaculate leather and chrome…”

Hand-break off, Sports Team are back. With musical pedals to the metal and saxophones at full throttle, a river of halogen glows golden and an incisive critique of latter-day capitalism burns through the haze as the six-piece’s new single ‘I’m In Love (Subaru)’ glides into view.

A song not only born to float out of car stereos, but one to question the mass-produced, brand-obsessed cultures that create them.

Carpooling with the likes of Trust-era Elvis Costello, city-pop icon Mariya Takeuchi and Bryan Ferry shimmering with all his Roxy Music sophistication, ‘I’m In Love (Subaru)’ merges thematic lanes with Prefab Sprout’s ‘Cars And Girls’, to deliver an updated exploration of cynical sting lurking behind the new car dream, though with a power steering assuredness Sports Team embrace the musical spirit of ‘the road’.

“The mood of the first verse and the chorus is quite sincere, a Hollywood-inspired, teenage love song,” explains guitarist and lyricist Rob Knaggs, “but by the time we get to the second verse, we’ve found the worm in the middle of that apple. All the symbols of teenage rebellion, the car itself, have all been co-opted into selling something that can’t actually be bought. It’s that classic, Freudian-drenched symbol of a middle-aged bloke in a sports car, wearing his racing gloves as he goes through a crisis. A real corporate, capitalised view of masculinity that is divorced from reality or what might genuinely be cool.”

With the pine air freshener unable to mask the whiff of unfulfillment around this consumerist vision, ‘I’m In Love (Subaru)’ artfully highlights the absurdity behind our era’s constant sales hype, evoking memories of Bill Clinton’s sax-playing escapades on primetime TV in 1992 as the then Arkansas governor tried to rally outsider cool behind his attempt to get the most mainstream job on the planet: the US presidency.

“The song is about the tension between those glossy inanimate objects you can project any desire onto versus all the stuff that creeps in behind it,” adds vocalist Alex Rice. “It should be a very uncomplicated love song, talking about cars and how people perceive their relationships, but with humanity, nothing is ever that simple.”

Though stung by the pervading cynicism, musically this love letter to the overwrought automotive icon that is the Subaru Impreza is truly devoted – and even ex-prez Bill would envy the luscious saxophones the band have added to accompany Rice as he seduces listeners with a rich croon.

While deconstructing a soft-focus culture that presents love as effortless as a Fast & Furious hand-break turn, ‘I’m In Love (Subaru)’ itself is locked into romantic cruise control as its horizon-capturing melodies reveal a dramatic shift of gears in Sports Team’s songwriting.

“Prefab Sprout was a big reference. The way they play with lots of 1950s studio effects that in other hands might be corny, but create something sincerely beautiful was inspiring,” says Knaggs. “There is humour to the lyrics but the music is not a bit, it feels very true to us. In the past, when we’ve made records we were conscious of being able to play it live straight away. This time we weren’t so hung up on that which was a big change, and that allowed elements like the saxophone and piano to come in.” It also brought some drama to Sports Team.

“Having been in London guitar world for a quite while, I began looking at people like Bryan Ferry and how it can be a bit more fun if you play around with characters,” says Rice. “He looks like he’s having a better time than a lot of the bands from our generation, and that’s what you want to be shooting for. The video we did with director Dora Paphides (The Last Dinner Party’s ‘My Lady Of Mercy’) really taps into that dramatic side too. It’s something that has always been there, but it felt right to really explore it around this song.”

‘I’m In Love (Subaru)’ is the first engine rev from Sports Team’s third album ‘Boys These Days’. While its Top 3 predecessors, Deep Down Happy (2020) and Gulp! (2022), were recorded between bouts of intensive touring, the record not only follows the London-based band’s longest absence from a stage, but it was created via a series of near hermetically sealed sessions which saw the band decamp to Bergen, Norway, in January 2024.

Though the town is perhaps best known musically as the birthplace of black metal, the recordings with producer Matthias Tellez (Girl in Red, CMAT) have produced the Mercury Prize-nominated group’s brightest-sounding record so far.

“It was a slightly surreal working process,” says guitarist Henry Young of their time in Norway which followed on from an extended writing period at home. “I’m not sure if it’s a Scandinavian thing but the working day was 10 till 4 rather than late nights and all hours. So it was wildly different to what we’d done before.”

“I think it produced a better quality,” adds bass player Oli Dewdney of the distinctly un-satanic approach. “The quality of life was certainly better. And you can’t afford to go out drinking, which helps.”

Yet the enforced clean living hasn’t stopped Sports Team from getting their hands dirty, as revealed by the tension between the smouldering music and the grubby reality ‘I’m In Love (Subaru)’ chronicles. ‘Boys These Days’ will deal with yet more of these vacant symbols of 21st century life where, as Knaggs puts it, “love is a tax-write off, and the moon is just a great big strip-mine in the sky. This is the age of obsolescence. The promise of a shiny new life, with a breakdown already built in.”

Boasting some of the band’s most dynamic musical performances to date, alongside the seer-like lyrical insight, ‘Boys These Days’ is the perfect roadside recovery for the pitfalls of modern life, both on record or on stage, the latter being a place that Sports Team are very keen to return to now an autumn UK tour has been announced to precede the album’s release early in 2025.

“Not playing live was like two years in a convent” jokes Rice, eyeing his band’s touring schedule. “Being onstage is a high you can’t get anywhere else.”

Although getting behind the wheel of a classic Impreza with ‘I’m In Love (Subaru)’ locked on the stereo promises to be some trip too. It truly does feel “like driving a throne”…

Sports Team are Alex Rice (vocals), Robert Knaggs (lyrics, backing vocals, rhythm guitar), Henry Young (lead guitar, lap Steel), Oli Dewdney (bass), Al Greenwood (drums) and Ben Mack (synths, piano & percussion)

–CONNIE BRANNOCK & LITTLE HOUSE OF FUNK– Known for saucy lyrics and high caliber performances, Connie was an entertainer out of the gate. Serious sorties began in high school when her band Luke performed throughout the mid-Atlantic—from Philly to Virginia Beach, to the Princeton Club and William & Mary College. She trekked west in the late 70’s, crooning with the Bill Brown Band in Salt Lake City and San Francisco. Back in Utah, she formed another hot tamale group, Connie and the Rhythm Method with David Jette. In demand, they toured Boise, Moab, Missoula, and the Hollywood Palace in Los Angeles.

In 1986 Connie Brannock won the Stroh’s Superstar Talent Search and was signed by MCA Records. Caleb Ruffin, with Sounds of Success (S.O.S.), recruited her to move to Atlanta and work on a single.

Instead, she up and joined the service just before her 35th birthday.

Connie served admirably for 21 years and deployed twice in Operation Iraqi Freedom. A compelling leader, she has been a mentor to many young men and women and believes that leadership is an act of love.

Connie continues to pay tribute to the legendary artists who shaped her sounds throughout her career: Sly and the Family Stone, Laura Nyro, Carole King, Jeff Lorber and Patrice Rushen.

Comedy without the competition.

In August 2021, local Comedians Priscilla Fernandez, Mo Urban and Amber Frame created Lady Haha: a comedy open mic for women, LGBTQ+, all marginalized folx and our allies to perform ANY genre of comedy (not just stand-up) in a supportive and super fun environment. Whether it’s your first time trying comedy or your thousandth—all levels of experience are welcome! Everyone gets at most 5 minutes of stage time, and it’s free!

Anyone 21+ can come watch, but the stage is reserved for marginalized-funny people and our allies. Our only rule is “no hate speech” (sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia and violent speech).

Lady Haha also produces comedy-variety shows in Tucson with an emphasis on diversity and all genres of comedy.

We’re proud to say we are the first and only comedy open mic of its kind—IN THE WORLD—right here in little ol’ Tucson, AZ. We hope to see more of these popping up!

Lomelda is Hannah Read’s musical project. In swampy, sweaty, Silsbee, TX, she first formed the band with her high school best friends. Throughout the next decade, Lomelda made a habit out of stretching to fit new friendships and shrinking down to solo strummings. Four albums and a never-the-same live show chronicle these shifts in shape and sound.

Lomelda’s fifth album is called Hannah. The album stretches and shrinks into many of Lomelda’s different forms, from expansive “Wonder” and rock band “Reach” to meandering “Stranger Sat By Me” and finger picking “It’s Infinite.” Through this range of moods, Hannah sings stories of strangers, suns, dogs, moms, brothers, favorite bands, “oh god!”s and big shots as well as herself, by name. She rejoices and reviles her god-given name and then flips it around to name herself Hannah once again. It is an album of confession and transformation made ultimately singable.

—THE STRIKE— The Strike is a three member band based in Los Angeles, CA including frontman Chris Crabb, Jay Tibbitts (drums), and David Maemone (keys/guitar). The Strike released their debut album “Faint of Heart” in June of 2017, which was met with great enthusiasm nationally. The success of the record allowed them to expand their presence into Los Angeles from the greater Mountain West region w here the band started. In 2022 the band signed with Nettwerk Music Group and released their follow up album “The Lost Years,” which helped them garner national attention and begin touring. The Strike will be releasing their third studio album in the Fall of 2024. The album was recorded with acclaimed producer John Fields (Switchfoot, Ben Rector, Corey Wong).

The Strike is known for their captivating live performances. In an age of musical minimalism, The Strike is reminiscent of rock bands from the 70’s and 80’s. They feature true showmanship in an age where the art of performance has been forgotten. Chris Crabb’s vocal style is akin to rock vocalists such as John Waite, or Steve Perry. The band members are all students at their craft. Those who attend Strike shows become instant fans.

—VANESSA COLLIER— Singer/songwriter Vanessa Collier’s sixth album Do It My Own Way comes out September 13 via Phenix Fire Records. Recorded on analog gear with the musicians largely in one room, Do It My Own Way is sonically inspired by the classic Memphis soul sound of Stax and Hi Records, especially that of the Staples Singers. Second single “Wild As a Rainstorm,” which dives deep into soul territory, powerfully gives advice to women and people who feel left out to ignore the naysayers and “Be a tapestry of dreams.” The track been added to Spotify’s official Retro Soul playlist. The groove and horns would make Willie Mitchell proud, and indeed features legendary Hi Records organist Rev. Charles Hodges. The vocals are powerful, awe-inspiring, and undeniably soulful vocals.

In a career on the road less traveled that has found him sharing stages with a staggering diversity of artists: from Mavis Staples, Emmylou Harris & Greg Brown, to Bon Iver, Arcade Fire & Gregory Alan Isakov, and more recently an impressive array of Native American musicians including John Trudell, Quiltman, Keith Secola, and Annie Humphrey, Huckfelt wanted to build a new musical community for this collection of songs. While his 2018 solo debut record “Stranger Angels” was written in complete isolation at Isle Royale National Park on Lake Superior just a few miles from the Canadian border, “Room Enough, Time Enough” was created in the borderlands of southern Arizona, in the musical mecca of Tucson, the high Sonoran Desert and one of the richest, most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. He asked Tucson producer and multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Sullivan (XIXA) to open up Dust + Stone Studios to a host of friends, contemporaries, strangers, artists, outlaws, cowboys, and Native musicians: Ojibwe ambassador of Native Americana music Keith Secola, Tucson’s own living songwriting legend Billy Sedlmayr, Giant Sand founder and head purveyor of the southwestern electric-fuzz border sound Howe Gelb; former Bob Dylan drummer Winston Watson, and Calexico hired guns Connor Gallaher on pedal steel and Jon Villa on trumpet. Together with the unmatched vocal chants of John Trudell’s constant collaborator & Warm Springs Nation Native singer Quiltman, these songs found their people and vice versa in a perfect storm of generosity, fierceness and compassion. In thousands of shows across the United States, Canada & overseas, Huckfelt’s grassroots following has grown from small-town opera houses, Midwestern barn concerts, and progressive benefit events to national tours and festival stages like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Edmonton and Calgary Folk Fests, and the legendary First Avenue club in his beloved Minneapolis home.

—WEATHERDAY—Weatherday is the noise-pop project of the mononymous Swedish artist Sputnik. While they have also found success with their side project, Lola’s Pocket PC, it is their cult-acclaimed album Come in that has garnered them a large and dedicated following through its raucous musical universe and serpentine sparklepunk stylings. Often heralded as an achievement of lo-fi bedroom pop tangled with threads of emo and DIY, Come in is better described, in its author’s own words, as a “life goal.”

The initial spark that ignited the fiery, heated debut from Weatherday originated from Sputnik’s desire to write, perform, and produce a record all on their own, from the ground up. Starting in 2014-2015, their preliminary attempts at what would eventually become Come in first materialized as a shoegaze EP, and then a dream-pop meets chamber-pop LP. Ever the perfectionist though, Sputnik wasn’t satisfied with the results and deleted the releases without a trace, finally deciding to set out in the direction of something more akin to their longtime influences of emo and its various subgenres.

After two years of tinkering in this stylistic sweetspot, Sputnik settled on the eleven knotted, maximal tracks that comprise Come in. From the caustic, harsh peaks of “Sleep in while you’re doing your best” to the soothing piano-laden passages of “Embarrassing paintings” and experimental, granular coda of “Water dreamer the same,” the range of Weatherday’s debut is doubtlessly a product of an artist who refuses to compromise a single shred of their vision.

—HOVVDY—A self-titled statement piece, Hovvdy’s fifth album fits with the comfortable confidence of faded blue jeans. Underlining years of hyper-reflective, deeply-fan-beloved songwriting, the 19-track sequence draws together swirling piano lines and vivid production under the cohesive vision of longtime friends Charlie Martin and Will Taylor. Hovvdy boldly broadens the scope of the Texas duo’s songwriting in a new partnership with Toronto-based outlet Arts & Crafts. The expansive double album presents a true co-production between Hovvdy and their frequent collaborators, Andrew Sarlo (Bon Iver, Big Thief) and Bennett Littlejohn (bassist, multi-instrumentalist). An unprecedented focus on live takes further peels the band’s early slowcore layers to show dazzling dynamic range, from the country feel of “Portrait” to the bombastic drums of “Meant.” Never staying still too long, Hovvdy easily folds introspection into their big, fearless choruses. Always guided with a gentle hand, the listener lands right there in the room, to witness the spontaneous synchronicity of Charlie and Will’s shared songcraft.

Matthew Logan Vasquez – Best-known as the co-founder and frontman for shape shifting heartland indie rockers Delta Spirit, Matthew Logan Vasquez’s fiery delivery and thought-provoking lyrics draw from a huge and versatile well of influences, including Gordon Gano, Kurt Cobain, Neil Young, and Thom Yorke. As a solo artist, he juggles elements of indie rock, electronic pop, R&B, and soulful Americana, flirting with despondency, but ultimately succumbing to beatitude. Vasquez’s latest release Frank’s Full Moon Saloon – an album that delivers more raw versions of songs that span the band’s 20 year career, was released in February this year. Part 2&3 of the Franks series will be rolling out through 2025.

—NAKED GIANTS—When Naked Giants formed in 2014, the Seattle trio—vocalist/guitarist Grant Mullen, bassist/vocalist Gianni Aiello and drummer Henry LaVallee—were all eighteen years old, and full of the reckless, restless energy of youth. A decade on, both they and the world have changed immensely. Shine Away—the band’s third full-length, following on from 2018’s SLUFF and 2020’s The Shadow—is very much an acknowledgement of that. It’s an album that doesn’t just reflect on the personal life and times of the three of them and the world at large, but casts a discerning, self-reflective eye on what it’s like to be in, and be, Naked Giants. It’s the sound of a band coming into, and becoming, themselves. Of course, that’s a never-ending process, but for the first time in their career, Naked Giants are taking stock of their journey—who and what they were, are, and want to be.
