Dance, drink, and hang out with us on the plaza!

Step into Nightshade that blooms after dark.

Inspired by the datura flower, a family tie to the nightshade flower. Datura has long been associated with dreamlike states, blurred realities, and a sense of crossing into otherworldly dimensions. This event channels that energy. Translating its myth and mystique into sound, light, and collective experience.

Come ready to let go and to feel the boundary between sound and self, enough to glimpse something deeper.

Toronto, Canada’s Anvil were one of the first North American bands to push the sound and style of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal one step further. Indebted to the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and many others from across the Atlantic, Anvil nonetheless played louder, faster, and heavier than their heroes, in the process laying the groundwork for the thrash movement that took over heavy metal’s underground in the ’80s. Anvil’s second and third albums, Metal on Metal and Forged in Fire, made significant waves in the metal community in 1982 and 1983

In 2009, a documentary film by the band’s former teenage roadie helped break them to the broader audience they never found in their prime. The tenacious metallers issued their 19th studio album, Impact Is Imminent, in 2022.

Zany antics notwithstanding, Anvil’s musical contributions were very real; their fastest songs were some of the earliest speed metal laid to wax, while jazz-trained drummer Robb Reiner set new technical standards for the genre, including pioneering the double bass drum technique that’s become a staple of much extreme metal since.

In 2005, former Anvil roadie and screenwriter Sacha Gervasi began filming a documentary about the band. The resulting film, Anvil! The Story of Anvil, followed their European tour and the recording of their 13th album, This Is Thirteen, produced by Chris Tsangarides. Released in 2008–2009, the documentary became the highest-grossing rock documentary in U.K. history, earned critical acclaim in the U.S., and helped revive the band’s career through festival screenings and live performances.

Delta Sleep is a British math rock quartet from Canterbury, Kent, England. Formed in 2010, Delta Sleep is driven by a desire to create fun and original, forward-thinking music. Their songs combine guitar driven melodies, held together by jazz influenced percussion and relentless bass, topped with sprinkles of passionate shouts and lulling chants.

The thing that humanity clings to is hope. In the darkness, light will prevail. In uncertain times, prosperity will ultimately endure: without it, there is simply nothing. On ‘Blue Garden’, Delta Sleep’s 4th studio album, out 27th September on Sofa Boy Records & Wax Bodega (US), the band find themselves digging beneath the overwhelming darkness of the world to find just a glimmer of light —tying in similar themes across their expansive back catalogue tobecome what is perhaps their heaviest record to date. ‘Blue Garden’ was recorded at the tail end of 2023 at Daft Studiosin Belgium with Mark Roberts (Black Peaks, Toska, The Physics House Band) after a year of huge tours across America, Asia and Australia. Where previous albums came together quickly, with all four members enteringthe studio armed with songs demoed, tracked and recorded live, this time the band started with a completely blank page. They opted to approach new material collectively within the space of two and a half weeks, jumping at the opportunity to play with new instrumentation at their fingertips to introduce electronic samples and synths. Given the time to really hyper focus on the production resulted in the scope to draw inspiration from the realm of fantasy and the real world that has permeated itsway into the band’ssound both sonically and visually. But it’s ‘Blue Garden’s’lyrical themes which trulyrazesit into darkness. Underscored by the horrors unfolding in Palestine, it serves as a form of catharsis to a pure sense of helplessness. “So slowly, I can focus on my needs, to feel good in my body / Because in the end it’s all we got / As we watch the worldburn, can’t you see that we’re burning”sings DevinYüceil on ‘Slow Burn’, posing the question of how you come to terms about dealing with traumatic moments outside of your own personal sphere that you feel powerless and despair.

W/ Kulululu & New Misphoria

TsuShiMaMiRe are a legendary Japanese rock trio formed in 1999 featuring Mari (vocals, guitar), Yayoi (bass, bv), and Maiko (drums, bv).

These girls have captivated audiences around the world for over 23 years, spanning thousands of live performances, 15 US tours, and 20 full length releases. Among many other achievements, their music has been featured on TV, film, animation, and video games.

TsuShiMaMiRe’s musical style ranges from hardcore noise to introspective indie rock, with traces of heavy funk disco and pop sentimentality. Mari’s quirky lyrics question social conventions and the anxieties of everyday life, rebellion, and love. Her vocals excel in melodic expressivity, ranging from child-like wonder to tragic despair. Yayoi’s groove is like that of a vengeful banshee in the throes of passion, suddenly pivoting from the stoic determination of a samurai in battle to the elegance and light-heartedness of a Japanese house cat. Meanwhile drummer Maiko locks down a constant punk backdrop, rallying the front pair but keeping them from toppling over the edge into insanity. The ferocity of these three warrior princesses culminates in a live show that is simultaneously upliftingly theatrical and brutally honest.

TsuShiMaMiRe are certain to delight heavy rock fans and all lovers of Japanese indie subculture!

W/ On Being an Angel

Thundering out of Santa Cruz’s thriving and resurgent music scene, First Day Back have spent their final years in college solidifying their place in the emo revival revival. Heralded as the rightful torchbearers of second wave emo, First Day Back recalls the vocal exasperation of Cap’n Jazz, the twinkle of American Football, and the youthful exuberance of Braid, all while reinventing the sound with the organic additions of violin and harmonica. A love letter to the past, Their debut and sole album Forward, self-released in June 2025, was recorded utilizing the acoustics of their Empire Grade house living room, and a muted blue that graces the cover matches the outer panelling of this sentimental domicile key to to the band’s foundations and process. “Forward enchants on first listen, Pitchfork wrote in their 8.1 review “First Day Back play with a transparency usually reserved for private moments: screaming into a pillow in your bedroom, or putting your hoodie up to stress-cry on the bus.” The quintet’s DIY perspective continues in their live show, which began in houses and anarchist bookstores before blossoming with sold out tours opening for Algernon Cadwallader, Everyone Asked About You, and Jejune, where thousands of kids screamed along to every word, wax, and woo.

Join Gabrielle Pietrangelo and her band on July 24th

If you ask anyone in Tucson about singer-songwriter Gabrielle “Gabby” Pietrangelo, they may tell you how she won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest with her Tucson anthem, “Summer Losers,” how she taught their children music, or helped someone find their voice after years away from singing. Gabrielle is a Tucson-based musician, award-winning songwriter, harmony group leader, teacher, and community builder, with a downtown music studio that is home to both school-age students and adults seeking to nurture their musical lives.

Gabrielle released her finest collection of songs to date on March 7, 2025, with her album Back to the Heart. As Duncan Hudson, Musical Director at KXCI, writes, “Back to the Heart is an album that was many years—and a lifetime of living—in the making and serves as a love song to this community, its people, their stories both personal and collective, and the amazing Sonoran Desert region we call home.” Whether performing solo or with her talented backing band, including Thøger Lund on upright bass, Casey Hadland on drums, and Chris Peña on keys, Gabrielle brings joy, artistry, and inspiration to every show.

Columbus, Ohio indie legends Moviola visit Tucson for the first time ever! With 11 albums over three decades to their name, this night will be a rare treat. Their latest, Earthbound (Dromedary), continues an inimitable mix of fuzzy cosmic country, Ohio Soul, and buzzing (gimme) indie rock. For fans of: the Kinks, Neil Young, Silver Jews, Fugs. Don’t miss.

Composer, songwriter, & master of harmony MaryAnne Muglia brings an excellent night of music to the Club Congress!

This time she’s joined by Alec Andre & Jeffrey Gordon Evans.

MARY ANNE MUGLIA:

Arizona-based composer, arranger, pianist, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist MaryAnne Muglia is an award-winning, genre-defying artist whose work lives in the space between tenderness and playfulness, darkness and light. Blending emotional honesty with lush harmony, her music invites listeners into a world where feelings aren’t just heard, they’re held.

As a songwriter and recording artist, MaryAnne creates music that feels both intimate and expansive. Her debut album, Try Hard, blends indie-folk lyricism, jazz sensibility, and pop clarity into a sound as rich and full as the life it reflects. Like a mosaic, her songs piece together fragile, fierce, and deeply relatable stories, offering quiet wisdom rooted in presence and authenticity.

The Technicolors are an American rock band from Phoenix, AZ. The band’s line-up includes founder Brennan Smiley (lead vocals, guitar), Sean Silverman (guitar, backing vocals), Nico Nicolette (bass guitar), and Kim Vi (keys).

Since introducing themselves in 2012, The Technicolors have woven a luminous sonic tapestry of fuzz-fueled riffs existing somewhere between the gloomy echoes of 90’s Britpop and the snake-charmed stars of the Sonoran desert. The band’s vast and diverse catalog is highlighted by a slew of critically-praised singles, including: “Tonight You Are Mine,” “Neon Roses,” “Space Cadet” and “Dress Up For You.” Over the years, The Technicolors have evolved their sound, most notably on their 2021 album Cinema Sublimina. Their music often explores themes of introspection, youth, and surreal storytelling, carried by Smiley’s distinct vocals and cinematic production.

The band has amassed over 500 thousand monthly listeners and 100 million streams on Spotify to date. Their new LP “Heavy Pulp” is set for release this August.

W/ Tijuana Panthers

A punk rock band that hits hard without ignoring melody or vocal harmonies, PLOSIVS is an all-star outfit featuring members of Rocket from the Crypt, Pinback, and Against Me!. The foundation of their sound is a blend of two lean, wiry guitars, percolating basslines, and propulsive drumming, all in the service of songs that are tuneful but stripped to the framework. The band makes music that’s both angular and engaging, with lyrics that are personal and urgent, an attack documented with clarity on their 2022 debut album.

PLOSIVS grew out of a songwriting collaboration between John Reis, best known for his work with Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, and Rob Crow, co-founder of indie rockers Pinback . The two found themselves working on material in a time of what they called “distance rock,” when the COVID-19 pandemic and other crises were preventing bands from touring, rehearsing in person, and releasing records. Reis and Crow wanted to start playing their new music as a way of focusing their energy in a positive way. With this in mind, they invited bassist Jordan Clark (a member of the group Mrs. Magician ) and drummer Atom Willard (who performed with Reis in Rocket from the Crypt, as well as keeping time for Against Me!, The Offspring, and Angels & Airwaves ) to be part of their new project. They dubbed the new group PLOSIVS, a variation on “Explosives” that put the emphasis on the consonants, and once Reis and Crow had written an album’s worth of songs, they gathered at San Diego’s Singing Serpent Studio with Clark and Willard and began work on their debut album. After making their live premiere at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, California in November 2021, PLOSIVS released their first LP in March 2022 ON Reis’ Swami Records label. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

W/ Earth Tongue

Hippie Death Cult have been described as “a journey through shameless and triumphant artistic expression, exploration and discovery” in the realms of psychedelia and riff-heavy rock n’ roll. The band hails from Portland, Oregon and during their formative years they have transitioned from a 4 piece to a more consonant power trio consisting of guitarist Eddie Brnabic, vocalist/bassist Laura Phillips and drummer Harry Silvers. In 2019 they signed to Cursed Tongue Records for the release of “111” then in 2021 signed to Heavy Psych Sounds Records to release “Circle of Days” and the Doom Sessions Vol.5 split. Both full-length albums received international critical acclaim while debuting at #1 on the Doom Charts. The band is also known for their high energy and passionate stage performances, having performed to audiences across America, Canada and Europe. They are currently in production for their 3rd studio album and are set to announce extensive tours to follow.

Earth Tongue is a heavy psych rock two-piece from Wellington, New Zealand. Guitarist Gussie Larkin is a master of the fuzz-smothered riff, and along with Ezra Simons’ off-kilter drumming, they’ve been sending punters into transcendental states since their emergence in 2016. Their debut album ‘Floating Being’ (Stolen Body Records, 2019) quickly became an underground hit, seeing them embark on multiple tours across Australasia and Europe in the years since its release. Along the way they’ve picked up high praise from BBC Radio6, Bandcamp and headbangers all over the world.

After touring with American multi-instrumentalist Ty Segall, the duo caught the attention of iconic Los Angeles based rock’ n’ roll label In The Red Records – an imprint that has released albums from the likes of Thee Oh Sees, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Wand and Ty Segall himself. In The Red promptly signed them, and released their second album Great Haunting in June 2024. Written during the pandemic lockdown era while holed up binging on 1970’s and 80’s horror movies, the nine-track album is a doom-soaked overload — conjuring vast sonics from just guitar, drums and yowls.

Earth Tongue have hit the road time and time again, playing over 50 shows throughout Europe and the UK in 2024 and sharing stages with the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, IDLES, Ty Segall, Acid King, Brant Bjork and Kikagaku Moyo. Earth Tongue’s live show is a powerful, cult-like experience – the perfect mix of throw-your-horns-up heavy, and can’t-stop-listening catchy. Their third studio album Dungeon Vision was produced by Ty Segall and released on In The Red Records in February 2026.

W/ Demon Grass

New York City’s Unsane assisted in pioneering a more aggressive, less studied version of noise rock, one that blended the scum/art industrial sturm und drang of , , , and with the decidedly more straightforward hardcore idiom favored by acts like . While developing the blueprint for noise-metal bands to follow, Unsane cut a remarkable swath through underground music, inspiring a devoted, cult-like following around the globe. As a power trio, Unsane relied upon a hammering, power-press rhythm section, a searing Telecaster howl, and distorted vocals that resembled nothing if not the sound of a man trapped in the New York Subway system.

Having met at Sarah Lawrence College in the late ’80s, the original incarnation of Unsane — (vocals, guitar), Peter Shore (bass), and Charlie Ondras (drums) — crawled larvally out of the practice space in 1989 and began playing New York’s seediest haunts. It was these graveyard slots at clubs like CBGB’s where the band developed and honed their trademark sound and delivered the goods with due intensity and volume. Unsane piqued the interest of numerous small indie labels and began issuing a series of singles and EPs before recording their self-titled debut with . Using the photo of a decapitated man lying across train tracks, Unsane’s album cover set the tone for the admixture of seething aggression, naked fear, and barely controlled noise chaos contained within. But the band’s devastating maelstrom contained more than enough tunefulness and rock propulsion to quite easily surpass its more affected Lower East Side peers.

During 1992, Unsane’s daunting schedule was cut devastatingly short by the untimely drug overdose of drummer Ondras. Former and drummer Vinny Signorelli climbed aboard the swiftly moving train in the fall of 1992 and the band began composing its next album. In the interim, compiled and issued a collection of Unsane’s early singles and compilation tracks, appropriately titled Singles: 89-92. It is perhaps Unsane’s defining moment. The following year found the band recording its first for , Total Destruction, a menacing, dark collection of songs driven by ‘s hypnotic drumming and ‘s man-pushed-to-the-edge vocals. More touring followed and released the Peel Sessions disc almost concurrently with Total Destruction.

After being discharged from in 1994, Unsane found both a new bass player in Dave Curran — who joined on tour while doing sound for the band — and a home for their next album, Scattered, Smothered, and Covered, on the independent noise rock label, . While maintaining the band’s signature sound and volume, 1995’s Scattered… showed the band opening their rhythmic approach, with most songs inhabiting a more rock-oriented 4/4 pattern, granting the album a more spacious and controlled feel. Scattered… also contained the unlikely MTV hit video for “Scrape,” featuring a series of skateboard accidents intercut with footage of the band performing live. Created for 200 dollars, it was ironically named one of MTV’s Ten Funniest Videos. The band toured relentlessly and managed to secure an opening slot with metal behemoths on one of their North American headlining tours. Shortly after, the trio made another label switch to and began constructing its final album, the ironically titled Occupational Hazard. While on a press tour in Europe only a month prior to the disc’s release, was brutally attacked by street thugs and left for dead on the streets of Vienna, Austria. After emergency surgery, he returned to the touring arena. Though Unsane temporarily disbanded in 2000, they returned a few years later with a compilation (Lambhouse) and an original album, 2005’s Blood Run. Visqueen, the group’s sixth studio long-player, was issued in 2007 via ‘s . It was followed in 2012 by Wreck, issued by the iconic punk label , and in 2017, Unsane came roaring back with Sterilize, which saw the group working with Los Angeles-based metal imprint Southern Lord. ~ Patrick Kennedy, Rovi

Public Onsale Friday, April 10 at 10am

“It clicked for me one day, that the album was going to be about hornets,” explains Sputnik, the mononymous songwriter behind the noise-pop project Weatherday. “It just made sense to me.”

Hornet Disaster, Weatherday’s follow-up to their 2019 debut Come in, and spiritual successor to 2022’s collab release Weatherglow, is their most expansive work to date. In Weatherday’s initial bout of inspired writing and recording, they produced over 70 songs for the record, but not before they had a complete, overarching narrative that was coherently tied back to Sputnik’s previous work.

Like its predecessor Come in, Weatherday’s Hornet Disaster lurches instantly into a caustic title track. The overture is signature Weatherday — urgent, noisy, erratic, and playful — but also hints at shifts in songwriting and production. Lead single “Angel,” backed with “Heartbeats,” demonstrates this evolution in a snappy, springy emo anthem, while its counterpart calls on longtime influence The Knife in a slinky, downtempo curio that pushes the Weatherday sonic universe in an unexpected direction.

The movement, color, and form of hornets are meticulously threaded throughout the album’s nineteen song tracklist, with hectic melody and unpredictable turns giving way to various forays: a tribute to Swedish winter in Weatherday’s first official song in Swedish (“Pulka”); the use of renaissance flute (“Green Tea Seaweed Sea”); and the folktronica experimentalism of third single “Ripped Apart By Hands.”

It’s a bustling record with disparate songs each vying for space like wasps in a swarm. It can inspire caution and chaos, but there’s wonder, purpose, and a certain familiarity there, too. Weatherday has extended the knotted, thrashing maximalism of Come in by doubling down with the uncompromised, no-stone-unturned nature of Hornet Disaster. Where Come in was the product of an artist searching for their voice, Hornet Disaster represents the joyful abandon that comes from having found it.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O..

Formed in 1995 by Makoto Kawabata at the same time as the Acid Mothers Temple Soul

Collective. The group released its debut album in 1997 on PSF Records (Japan), and it was

selected as one of the year’s best albums in the The Wire magazine (UK). In 1998 the group

played their first tours of the US and Europe. Since then the group has released a huge number of

albums on labels from many different countries. As of 2017, the group has released around 80

albums. Every year since 1998, they have toured extensively in the US and Europe, and

more recently have started performing around Asia and in Japan too. The group has performed in

collaboration with many musicians including psychedelic originators Gong and Guru Guru,

Simeon (Silver Apples), Nik Turner (Hawkwind), and the Occitanian trad sinder Rosina de Peira.

Japanese collaborators have included Afrirampo, Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins), Maso Yamazaki

(Masonna), Seiichi Yamamoto (Boredoms), Jun Kuriyama (The Ox), and many others.

To begin with the group had a floating line-up with contributions from many members of the

AMT Soul Collective. But as tours became more frequent, the group began to coalesce around a

core touring line-up. Other bands were created with Acid Mothers Temple as part of their name

(AMT & The Cosmic Inferno, AMT SWR, AMT & The Space Paranoid, AMT & Infinity Rising

Zero, Acid Mothers Gong, Acid Mothers Guru Guru, Acid Moon Temple, etc.), but AMT & The

Melting Paraiso U.F.O. has continued to function as the mothership and main lineage for all our

activities.

In 2016, 21 years since the group’s founding, there was a major shift in the line-up and “Next

Generation” was added to the name. We now view the first 20 years as chapter one in our story,

and we are now turning the page to start chapter two. The group played more than 100 shows in

each year, toured in Europe, North America, South America, Oceania and Asia, also Japan. They

also played many festivals (Glastonbury Festival in UK, Levitation in US and France, Rock In

Opposition in France, Standon Calling in UK, Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video &

Music Festival in Malaysia, LUC fest ÙFÈËÉ¢21⁄2Òô ̃·1 in Taiwan, etc).

During pandemic, they launched their official Bandcamp, have released more than 60 albums

(including many unreleased materials), and have toured in Japan in each year. And they played

the streaming festival “Levitation Sessions”. They organized “Acid Mothers Olympic 2021”

against “Tokyo Olympics 2021”, they originated and played a new style of “music sports”.

Finally the group went to the first European tour in Autumn 2022 and North American tour in

Spring and Autumn 2023, after pandemic. The group conducted long tours in Europe in the

spring and in the United States in the fall in 2024 and 2025. In 2026, in addition to these tours,

they have been invited to perform at festivals in the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, and

the United States.

The current touring line-up is: Kawabata Makoto, Higashi Hiroshi, Satoshima Nani, Sawano

Shozo and Jyonson Tsu since 2022.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. :

Kawabata Makoto : guitar, speed guru

Higashi Hiroshi : synthesizer, fishin’god

Jyonson Tsu : vocal, guitar, bouzouki, midnight whistler

Satoshima Nani : drums, another dimension

Sawano Shozo : bass, hex man

In Ensenada, Mexico, where the Pacific horizon cuts a clean, unwavering line, Holy Wave recorded their latest full-length, i’m DADA, a record that feels both expansive and newly concentrated for the subterranean pop four-piece. Stepping outside the United States was less a retreat than a shift in perspective, creating distance to recognize a new sound that had been slowly taking shape among them. i’m DADA quickly revealed its character: more propulsive, more candid, and their most structurally deliberate work to date.

Working alongside experimental duo Lorelle Meets the Obsolete at their studio El Derrumbe the sessions folded community into the album, though its emotional core had already formed over months of pre-production. Half of Holy Wave is Mexican, with roots in the El Paso border region, so recording in Ensenada felt intuitive and relaxed. Joo Joo Ashworth, mixing engineer and longtime friend, also provided a pivotal presence helping crystallize the album’s rhythmic language and subtly expanding the band’s sound. The songs began reflecting conversations about fatherhood and partnership, breakups and estrangement, the queasy acceleration of AI, and what it means to remain present and principled while the world lurches unpredictably forward.

This tension is not announced but absorbed into the music. Holy Wave stretches their familiar sense of woozy atmosphere into something leaner and more direct. There are more loops and samples woven throughout than before, grooves that feel constructed, cyclical, hypnotic. Some tracks drift toward dub’s elastic spaciousness; others pulse with cinematic downtempo gravity. There is a fresh sense of momentum throughout the record, rhythms that pull forward, dream-saturated textures, sheets of fuzz, and softly suspended vocals.

“dewey’s dirge” unfolds patiently: hazy guitars bloom, a softened motorik pulse moving steadily beneath. The vocals remain submerged, widening rather than exploding. It feels expansive and reflective, a comedown hymn that trades drama for immersion. “i’m DADA,” by contrast, locks into a lean, circular groove. A tight drum figure, rubbery bassline, and clipped guitar phrase repeat until they begin to feel animate. Lyrically, the song circles the complicated devotion of fatherhood, written in a brief pocket of rare solitude for a parent: Always loving (Try to do what’s right) / Always learning (There’s never enough time). “s33.u.in/HAL” plays like a transmission caught midair, faintly mechanical, immersive without ever fully resolving, capturing the album’s central sensation: the act of trying to communicate clearly through static.

If earlier Holy Wave records often felt defined by their sense of drift, i’m DADA feels newly grounded. The album doesn’t abandon immersion; it disciplines it. Grooves settle, repetitions accrue weight, and the music is composed and unshaken amongst its heavier themes. What emerges is not reinvention but a sharpening, with Holy Wave sounding less like a band drifting through atmosphere and more like one deliberately shaping it amongst the chaos.

“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be in a rock and roll band.”

Dave Hause had an epiphany rewatching Goodfellas. “There’s that scene in the beginning where Henry Hill says, ‘As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.’” The Philly-bred, California-based singer-songwriter always longed to be in a different kind of mob.

“This record is my realization that, as far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be in a rock and roll band. This record is that rock and roll band distilled into 10 songs.”

This record is …And The Mermaid. And those 10 songs offer a welcome shock to the system, blending Hause’s signature lyrical elan and gift for surging melodies with his keening vocals and some deliciously sharp musical elbows courtesy of the titular group.

“I had made a couple of records in a row in Nashville, and I was super happy with the outcomes,” says Hause of 2023’s Blood Harmony and 2021’s Drive it Like it’s Stolen, both produced by Will Hoge with top-flight session musicians. While they certainly had their muscular moments, those records were more in line with the Americana-tinged music Hause had been making as a solo artist. He ended up on several solo tours, as well as some duo outings with his brother and collaborator Tim, which necessitated stripping the songs back. “It occurred to me how far I’ve come from my roots,” he says. “Punk rock just isn’t where my muse has been for the last couple albums.”

But as he pumped electricity when playing those solo songs with his occasional band The Mermaid at his celebratory weekend festival Sing Us Home in Philly the last few years, he realized, “I was just missing plugging in and turning up. I was missing the energy that it takes to deliver that show.”

While the former leader of beloved Philly punk rockers The Loved Ones has been no stranger to going to 11, it had been a minute since The Mermaid — whose current iteration includes brother Tim Hause on guitar and vocals, bassist Luke Preston, keyboardist Mark Masefield, and drummer Kevin Conroy — had done a proper tour. And they’d never recorded together.

“This is the first time I’ve taken that band into the studio and been like, ‘No matter what, damn the torpedoes, we are going to sound the way we sound. I’m not going to Nashville and getting the murderers row of players. This is our sound,’” says Hause of the mission statement for …And The Mermaid, which is being released on Hause’s Blood Harmony label.

Nearly 20 years into his career, the collection also represents a number of other firsts. It is the first album in his solo career where the entire band has been invited to contribute to the songwriting process. It contains Hause’s first cover on an album of originals, a harmony-laden rendition of “Bible Passages” by Tim McIlrath of Rise Against — “I finally was just totally comfortable enough to put a song I believe in that someone without the last name Hause wrote on my record.” And it’s the first time he’s recorded outside the U.S.

With a little help from the Canadian government (in the form of a grant), The Mermaid decamped to Vancouver in January 2025 to co-produce the album with Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung) who also served as engineer and mixer. “Jesse is about my age, so he’s just as fired up on Minor Threat as he is on Bryan Adams,” says Hause of the obvious kindred spirit, with whom he had been chatting over the years. “The sonic references were really aligned, and I love his acumen and his approach. It’s also a great studio, in one of my favorite towns, with tons of gear.”

The band and Gander tracked over 20 songs in two weeks, and Hause found himself grateful for the varying point of views that having other voices in the studio offered, even as he retained final say as bandleader. “It went really well,” he says of the creative collaboration. “We’ve cultivated a ton of trust and transparency. I would be an absolute fool to be this far in and assume that an idea shouldn’t at least be considered. The older you get, the closer you can stay to the river of creativity, the better your life is. I had full faith that these four people that I’ve been working with in various iterations over the years are trying to do just that.”

It was Tim, who is also one of his older brother’s biggest fans, who helped Hause rediscover his inner rock and roll animal. “One of the things that Tim said when we were four or five songs into making this record was, ‘wow, I’m most excited for the fans for this one,’” Hause says. “‘Without hindering your creativity or making some preconceived decision to go back to your roots, you are going to stoke out every Loved Ones fan who we might’ve lost on a finger-picked gentle version of something. Every rock fan of ours, this is what they want.’”

Brother Tim was right, and the album wastes no time announcing itself. “A Knife in the Mud” kicks off with a trumpet herald that gives way to a galloping groove that feels very much like the rock and roll cavalry is on the way even as Hause announces that vultures are circling to attack and balefully intones “There’s no knight coming in on horseback/It’s a fight for a knife in the mud.” The first of the album’s several anthemic choruses kicks in just when all hope is lost as Hause defiantly sings “We ain’t going down easy/We ain’t going down at all/We’re never gonna die.” But Hause wonders, is that a good thing? “Maybe it might not be the best thing that this cockroach-like species that we are is going to keep proliferating,” he muses.

The full-tilt fist-pumping pummels through the next four tracks. “Cellmates,” a fast and furious chronicle of survival complete with galvanizing “Whoa-oh-oh” refrain, balances the tension between the triumph of surviving and the rueful surveying of the wreckage of that survival as “we mainline nostalgia like amphetamine.”

“The initial inspiration was getting sober,” say Hause. “A lot of us made it out of really bleak times where we were in a lot of pain; using and abusing drugs and alcohol to mitigate that pain. I’m almost 10 years sober and I found myself running into old friends. We’d end up being like, ‘Hey, remember that time?’ And what we’re describing was fucked.”

Burning guitars undergird the emphatic vocals of “Look Alive” with Hause contemplating the end of the world and hollering “If I’m gonna pay for my sins/Goddamn I wanna sin some more” and engaging in another round of righteous “whoa-ohs” that will no doubt lead to robust singalongs at live shows. He lets them come organically, he says of choosing just the right spot for an exclamation. Then he runs it by his twin six-year-old sons, noting, “If they’re pumped and they can remember this, everybody will.”

“I really do believe that songs are best when we all sing them,” he says of the community of the live space. “Everybody’s busy, so remembering every single one of my little lyrics might be a lot for your average person with a job,” he says with a laugh. “But if you give them a ‘whoa,’ it gives them something to latch onto.”

“Mockingbird Blues” is a restless ode to feeling unmoored that takes a pleasingly dissonant left-turn with some saloon piano licks that amp up the song’s sense of displacement. And “Revisionist History” — inspired in part by Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book The Message — is a dizzying, punk-inflected rocker that careens through the last 60 years with a look at how the good old days weren’t always good for everyone and maybe we shouldn’t be trying to turn back time.

“That song ties to ‘Enough Hope,’” he says of a deeper cut that takes the POV of those in power laughing at the working class. “And it ties also to ‘We mainline nostalgia like amphetamine’ from ‘Cellmates.’ That’s the common thread, that the personal can become political. If we’re so afraid of the future, not only are we going to hang around like we’re cellmates in a prison yard, but we’re also going to revise history to make it look rosier than it actually was.”

The album downshifts ever-so-slightly with the skittering ‘Yer Outta My Hair,” leading into the burbling guitars and soul-searching of “Bible Passages” and the midtempo pop-punk stomp of the delightful “Rumspringa,” which took a few musical cues from his pals the Dropkick Murphys. “May Every Last Fever Break,” a poignant parent’s wish for their children, fittingly featuring more interlaced sibling harmonies from Tim, brings the album to a soft landing as the faint trumpet herald from the album start fades out, signaling it may be time to put the weapons down and rest awhile.

Hause says that venturing into — and being fully embraced by — the Americana/singer-songwriter space for a few years ended up leading him back to a version of where he began. “It gave me enough confidence to come back to the rock and punk thing and be like, ‘I got nothing to prove. I’m just going to do me.’”

Fortunately he is not doing it alone and is eagerly looking forward to taking these songs and his band on the road, plugging in and turning it up and reveling with an even bigger gang, his fans.

“The band is called The Mermaid because being in a band has always felt like something I’ve had for a moment, and then the whole myth of it just swims away. If that keeps being the case, I want a musical document of the time we spent together.”

He hopes those fans have a similar epiphany when listening to…And The Mermaid that he had in making it: that being part of something larger than yourself can bring a different sense of meaning to your life.

“I hope people take away the belief that we can do things that are greater than ourselves when we decide to work together,” he says. “That’s what a band promises. That’s what a live music event promises. It’s what a festival promises. It’s what relationships promise. If you can work together, it’s better than being isolated and living in fear. It’s messy. It can be ugly. You’re going to get into arguments. Somebody’s going to get the last piece of cake and you’re going to give that person shit but, hopefully, there’s enough goodwill in the mission that you can forgive each other and know ‘This is greater than I could do on my own.’”
