($15-$25 | 7pm & 8:30pm Sets) Every Thursday, drummer & producer Pete Swan presents a spotlight on his favorite musicians. This Thursday, we welcome internationally-renowned guitarist **John Stowell** to the Century Room stage!
**John Stowell**
John Stowell embarked on his successful career in the early 1970s, initially honing his skills under the guidance of mentors Linc Chamberland and John Mehegan. His musical journey gained momentum when he partnered with bassist David Friesen in New York City, resulting in a prolific seven-year duo that recorded and toured extensively across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. A significant highlight was their groundbreaking 1983 tour of the Soviet Union, marking the first time in four decades that an American jazz group performed publicly in Russia.
Beyond his dynamic partnership with Friesen, Stowell’s international presence continued to flourish. His enduring commitment to music education and performance led him to serve as Artist-In-Residence at various schools globally, contributing columns to renowned magazines, and participating in prestigious events like Oregon Public Broadcasting’s PDX Jazz Summit. Noteworthy accolades include being recognized in Downbeat’s International Critic’s Poll in 1978 and 1979 and having his album “Through the Listening Glass” selected among the “Ten Best Jazz Albums of the Decade” by the Los Angeles Examiner. Stowell’s extensive recording and performance credits include collaborations with luminaries like Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Art Farmer, and many others, solidifying his lasting impact on the jazz scene.
